I woould have to say WHOA! on banging on the drums - it is too easy to miss and hit the studs/backing plate.
As splatterdog and Petros suggest - penetrating oil (at least ATF) on the studs, in the two removal holes and where the drum encirles the hub - wait a bit and then add the bolts and turn slowly. If nothing happens - more oil and try again. And then try backing off the adjuster (PITA and awkward).

We skied Stevens Pass and the skiing was good. I think they are going to get more snow in the next few days which will only improve things. I really enjoyed it.

If they were looking at the Fel-Pro valve cover gasket cover part numbers, there appears to be two - one with the semi-circular plug and one without. I always buy the one with the semi-circular plug that goes on the rear side of the head. That would be Fel-Pro #VS50348R. Perhaps this will help clear some confusion.

You need the semi circular plugs and I'd use some gasket goop around them and some to glue the large gasket down on the cylinder head...this way the job might never need to be done again. Plus there are some rubber gaskets on the hollddown bolts?

....to retire for the evening in his 100% solar/wind powered house, reading Carl Sagan's "The Cosmos" next to a roaring fire. Wearing a smoking jacket hand made of hemp of course.
It's a scientific fact that in a twin engine aircraft, when one engine fails there is always enough power in the remaining engine to make it all the way to the crash site.

Is he wearing that smoking jacket or sniffing a smoldering smoking jacket made of hemp?

Usually there are no issues with a seal leak, if not too bad, and you keep it topped up with oil. You might try some of that oil stop leak stuff the softens and swells old seals, it might work. I do not recommend anything with any type of "seal conditioner" because it the softens and weakens seals, that is unless they are already marginal, or worse. So give it a try.

The only bad thing about a leak is it could get on the clutch at the rear, or the timing belt at the front, which can damage them, but not usually if it is not a bad leak.

Considering how much work it is to replace a rear seal, I would try the seal conditioner for, at least as a temp measure, until you can afford to get to it and replace it. You could even wait until you need a new clutch and do it then.

good luck.

My sister had one of these wagons and had a rear seal go out....I told her it was still drivable and eventually she gave the car to her son who drove it to Florida and then drove it around down there...said he had a little trouble in the mountains with the slipping clutch though. Yours isn't that bad I'd guess. Just make sure you have an opening below the clutch so the oil can drain and keep the level up in the engine.
