Re: Removing rear brake drums

M8 x 1.25

If you can find bolts that are about 3" long they will get the drums all the way off even if the shoes are really hung up on the drums. The bolts I was just using last week were just a tad short so I had to mess around with the shoe adjuster through the backing plate, and that sucks.

Re: after many years, I'm finally back in the T4 game

I looked closer at it today and there's lots of drainage below it so I'm probably not even going to worry about it. But if I do find the carpet getting soaked once I start driving it, that's a good idea that I will try, Matt.

Re: after many years, I'm finally back in the T4 game

I'm waiting for gear oil for #8 to arrive so in the meantime, I'm digging into some other stuff on it. Got most of the interior and exterior lights working the other day (I need both dome lights though, if anyone has those that I can buy off them), and today I started patching some of the holes in t...

Re: stock radio removal?

Rich was right! I couldn't remove the radio surround trim until the radio's face plate was out. The knobs needed to be pulled off (in two pieces, the cap-like outer piece first and then the ring-like inner piece), then the nuts on the tuner and volume shafts, then the face plate slid off (then I cou...

stock radio removal?

My '83 has a stock radio in it, which I've never encountered before and I can't figure out how to get it out. I assume the knobs should pull off and the rest should be obvious from there but I can't get them to budge, and don't want to break them (the radio works so I'd like to keep it). thumbnail_I...

Re: after many years, I'm finally back in the T4 game

Yesterday I did the rear brakes in #8. Brake shoes, wheel cylinders, one park brake cable. The brake line nuts were pretty frozen into the cylinders, and also to the lines themselves. The first one eventually broke free with a bunch of gentle bouncing with the flare nut wrench but the second one was...

Re: Winter Tercel Project

check / replace the trans gear oil before driving somewhere. doenst take long for these transmissions to fail when they get low on oil. +1, these transmissions were unique to this car so there are very few parts available for them now. Baby that thing. On that topic, there are a few big threads her...

Re: convert auto trans to manual?

unless your auto car is 87-88(?) you already have 3.73's. i believe the last two years of the auto got switched to 3.9. 83-84 had 3.73 gears, 85-87 had 4.11. manuals, yes. autos were different. they carried 3.73 till 86, then switched to 3.9 in 87-88. bet you also didnt know that there are differen...

That was quick, AlexArrow!

Forum member simon84 installed a winch in his tercel in roughly the same spot not too long ago.

And here's a pic he sent me of using it the first time to straighten a post at his place.

Re: after many years, I'm finally back in the T4 game

Today I got the transmission back in the car. Still have to reinstall the starter, distributor, and some other things, plus I'm waiting for some heater hoses from rock auto to show up (the non-molded hose I had bought kinked too much so I bought some pre-molded ones), before I can test everything bu...

Re: Blowing black smoke and is running rough.

Remember there are two idle speed screws. One is for the "fast idle" (aka initial idle when the car is started and cold), the other is for regular idle. Have you looked through the factory service manual here on the forum? It's pretty useful for stuff like this. It's impossible to set the ...

Re: Blowing black smoke and is running rough.

Welcome to the forum. Black exhaust is a sign of excess fuel, in other words it's running way too rich. A common cause of that is a ruptured AAP diaphragm on the carb -- I know you swapped the carb but AAP's fail fairly frequently, plus it's easy to check so that's the first thing I'd look at. Have ...
