Parts Availability?

Post by pnwtercel. »

Hi all, recently picked up an 84 4WD and have been browsing around the forum and popular parts sites such as RockAuto and it seems like a lot of the typical maintenance items are available such as carb rebuild kits, gasket kits, etc but was wondering if there’s anything specific to grab and stow away for the future if it’s typically hard to come by?

Also anything special to look out for or address on these cars? This one is a manual with 180k on it and has had general upkeep over the years according to the previous owner but no detailed list.

Thanks in advance and looking to diving in and restoring it a bit!

A spare distributor is the first thing that comes to mind. It seems the T4WD was a bit more popular in the PNW... if you happen to see one in the local junkyard, consider investing in some spares.
Keep clean oil in the trans and rear differential, and make efforts to inhibit rust underneath. I hope you get many more miles.

The #1 thing is to check the gear oil level in the transmission. If it's low, it will kill the transmission in short order so make sure to address any trans leaks as they come up. These transmissions are specific to this generation of Tercel with very few replacement parts available for it so it's very important to take care of it.

I agree with Paul regarding the distributor. I like having a good complete spare one that I can swap in quickly to rule it in or out when dealing with issues. A spare good carb is nice to have around too.

Welcome to the club and congrats on the '84! You're right—basic maintenance stuff is usually still available, but there are definitely a few things worth grabbing while you can. Some of the harder-to-find parts include front CV axles, rear wheel bearings, and the 4WD shifter bushings. If you ever see a good condition center console or dash trim, snag it—they’re tough to replace once broken.

As for things to watch out for: check for rust around the rear wheel arches and under the battery tray. Also, the vacuum lines on the carb can cause headaches if not routed correctly—label them if you do any work there.

Looking forward to seeing your build!
