Rough idle

Post by Twamble »

Hi everyone, I have a quick question, what would cause an 87 sr5 to have a a rough idle and then just die, I've checked for vacuum leaks and didn't find anything. What would be my next option? Tune-up?

Have you actually adjusted the idle? Does it do it hot, or cold? When is the last time the plugs, wires, rotor and distributor cap were changed?

welcome to the form,

short of tracking down a vac leak, you might try speeding up the idle a little. also, use the vacuum routing diagram and double check that all the vac lines are connected to the correct places, and none are cracked or damaged. This is easy to do with the vac diagram, it will only take about 15 to 20 min to check them all, just take one at a time and verify it is routed correctly. Do not assume who ever worked on it before, including a repair shop, got them all installed properly.

good luck.

Do the simple things first...if cap was replaced make sure plug wires are in correct order and connected well.

is the large vac line on driverside base of the carb plugged into the bottom of the air filter housing?
when the air filter housing is removed you need to plug the end of that hose so you can run the engine with air filter housing off (for testing and inspection purposes)
bad idle can be caused by quite a few things
sometimes its the carb itself
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.
