OK in deep crap ,or not in deep crap .crankshaft pulley.

Well I seems as though my crank shaft pulley is spinning around and not turning the engine over I think the little key /notch /nipple thing that slides in the groove of the actual pulley either broke or something is not catching .if the little tooth broke off of the shaft is there a way to secure the wheel to the shaft besides welding it?

Remove the crank pulley and replace the woodruf key, these keys are avaiable at most auto parts stores. you will half to clean up the keyway with a small file ----- and posibaly replace the pulley, if the keyway is trashed to much to use. Wile you have this apart ide replace the timing belt and water pump, make sure to retorque the crank bolt to the proper specks in the FSM . lARRY

sometimes the slot for the woodruff key gets enlarged
if thats the case i do not know if there is a fix for that
if there is i sure would like to know what it is
as i have a good engine with that problem

There is a fix for a buggered up crank keyway. the early Miatas are notorious for this problem. they developed a fix: clean up the damaged outside radios of the crank and the groove, use a new key, clean with solvent and compressed air, fill the damaged keyway with epoxy and than install the new key. fill the groove on the pulley with epoxy and than slide it over the key/crank end, clean off excess Epoxy that squeezes out, torque to spec and allow to cure 24 hours before driving on it.

Seems to work okay, not a lot of load on the pulley. Might be a PIA to take it apart later, but it should not have to be taken apart for some time.

If the crank pulley's toast, more likely than not you're gonna need the crank gear, woodruff key, and bolt (for good measure.) How's $25 for all of it plus the ride sound? Only problem is I'm in Maryland, so time could be a problem...

Let me know, Rich.
if it aint there, there's a good chance it won't break!

What kind of epoxy do you recommend i.e jb weld ,fast set .marine etc.

Have you looked for a machine shop in your area? They should be able to weld in some filler and reshape the key way.

that would be a reasonable thing to do if replacement pulleys were not available. But likely it would cost more than you can get a replacement elsewhere, used or even a new one. Lots of things can go wrong that way too, like damaging the rubber dampener that is bonded between the the metal hub and pulley ring (if that bond fails, the front pulley is junk). Cutting a new key way takes specialized machinery too. Just get another used one and install it. Cheaper and less risk than having a mechine shop mess with it.

If you were going to try the epoxy repair, get high strength epoxy. JB Weld and similar DIY epoxies are formulated more for convenience than high strength.

I wonder what caused the key to get mangled, appears perhaps the front bolt was not tight enough to keep the pulley from working the key back and fourth, damaging it eventually and it damaging both the key way and the pulley. Make sure you torque that nut down to full spec,.
