I think that the clutch is frozen to the flywheel, because I bought a 88 wv fox sport wagon 2 miles from where this car is at. And the clutch was just frozen to the flywheel. The car ran when It was parked and the guy hasn't fooled with it since. Shockingly enough it has a clear title. I found this forum because I went to purchase the same car from a guy in southern Illinois for 1000 but it ran. Unfortunately when the guy contacted me after I sent around 30 emails he said he sold the car. So I've been on the hunt since then. The main problems I'm going to face is 13 year old gas left in the tank, carb issues and if the tranny is "bad" finding a place that will rebuild it for me. I did manage to find a place with one online for about 1000 but it's a quality tested transmission if I have to go to that extreme. Thank you all for the support.

Lets hope your tranny is not bad because they very hard to find and some parts are no longer available for a rebuild. If the tranny is in one piece you can bench test it to be relatively certain it's good before install.

As to the bad gas I revived a car last year with bad gas and learned what not to do. My mistake was to put compressed air on the clogged hard lines at the fire wall and not remove the TANK FIRST. I ended up with all the junk in the lines inside of the screen in the tank the car ran great for a while but then some of the crud would clog the line and the car would stall out every couple miles or so. My short cut turned into a big pain in the a**. Drop the tank first it's easy in this car

a new tank runs $260 and quality auto parts has a good transmission for this year for right at $1000. the downside to the transmission is that only the 83-84 models will fit but lucky enough for me the gentleman that i spoke with gave me the part number off the transmission… i smell direct import from japan lol. the volkswagon fox i had sat outside for 20 years 2 miles away yet had no rust… i had to get a new tank for it from brazil and that took a year of waiting cause it was parked with a full tank of gas

It's good to know you are aware of the gear change in 1985 many have messed up tranny's because they "look" the same.
If you do end up needing a tranny 1000 is a little high. Some members here hoard parts like myself i have an 3.73 tranny i pulled out of a car with 16500 miles on it. I will sell it to a member here fore far less than 1000 in the interest of keeping a t4 on the road.
there is another member that has rebuilt a few as well and has yet to test one in a car.

thats good to know. I saw one on ebay for 450 that is in a poor t4 that looks like its been in a sand storm for many years of its life. and the people who have it are basically gutting it and selling the parts which is sad. I'm gonna enjoy getting the little car going because I like simplicity in cars and I'm one of the few people who actually have problems driving automatic transmissions lol.

Well I managed to get her home and shockingly enough she only has 178907 miles. Little old lady story behind it the guy replaced the tranny with one out of a 85 (junkyard pull) so I need a tranny this one went bad when the son grabbed the wrong lever racing and slammed it into 4wd.

I'll post more pictures later when I get them transferred to my computer

Well the tranny isn't out of an 84 but the guy didn't know about the gear change it will go into gear but the fwd-4wd lever freely moves no connection at all

Gee, that looks like just surface rust, hopefully it's pretty solid.

It is just surface rust :) I've got to clean the sticks and junk out of the engine bay but we took the breather off and the carb looks ok.

the 4wd lever issue could be as easy as the linkage being bent or broken. if you crawl under and take a look you will see it. i think it's just 10 mm nut on each end, and use a 9 mm wrench on the flats at the base of the stud.

not likely so simple but you never know till you look.

Cool. I'll look into that thanks. I also need the plastic door handle piece to open the drivers door the metal bracket is there ,but the plastic is gone.
