If you look at the big diagram in the FSM...there is a coil in the dist...an ignitor...rotor and pickup coil...vac & centrifigal advance.

Maybe an better external coil could be used? The coil is usually what gets weak?

My guess is that the ignitor takes the signal from the rotor and controls the output from the coil...acts as a switch or relay.......or something like that.

I'm different, obviously.
I've got an external coil with a standard Bosch disctributor with vacuum advance and all that.

Which makes me think that it wouldn't be too hard to bolt on a wikkid electronic ignition setup...

the distributor on a mid 90's corolla (the generation before the 1999 model) looks exactly the same as on the tercel, i've never looked at them side by side, but i would bet that you could at least swap the built-in ignition coil itself into the tercels distributor. i'm sure it puts out more power, but at the very least, it will have less milage on it and would provide a better spark.

the coil can be removed from our distributors, my tercels dizzy was swapped because its coil wen't bad, however, the shaft on the replacement dizzy had alot of free play in it, so i swapped the coil from one to the other. its easy enough, the screws were just really tight.

Typrus:

> Nippondenso IIA Distributor. Crane Cams entire conversion kit from points to
> electronic = Part #700-0231
> Available from Summit Racing or Jegs

None of our cars have points.

Every Tercel wagon sold in the US and Canada has a solid state electronic ignition.

There ARE no points to replace.

Just so you know :D

I guess I'm still wierd.
I pull my disrtibutor cap off and lo and behold, I can see a set of points beneath it. I think that's because I've got an aftermarket Bosch distributor.

Did all Australian Tercels come with that, or is it just me?

Well, are you sure that your DISTRIBUTOR is a Bosch unit, or just the cap and rotor? If you actually have a Bosch distributor, do you know what the model is?

Also, I have never looked at an Australian Tercel, you might very well have gotten points way back in 83 or 84...

What do your points look like? Single shaft, keyed (or squared) with stationary contacts? How often do you have to adjust your points? Is it points and condenser, or points firing to a IC controlled ignitor box somewhere else?

Can you take a photo for us?!!? That would be AWESOME!

Thanks dude.

I got points in my '83 and '84 but mine are both original ignition specs ('cept the points that is..as I have just changed them in the '84.)

Happy to take a photo if you want an Australian model (or did you just want Lateers aftermarket version). will get it done on the weekend!

Electronic ignition would be better I guess. wonder if the Japanese replacement engine's have this as my '83 that I'm selling this weekend has a replacement 3ac (the previous owner not wanting to fork out the extra $100 Aus ($70 US) to put a 4ac in it!!!)

p.x. Teddy where would it say on the the engine if it was a 3A-CV or anything special (sure doesn't seem to drive v.special). all I can see is the big 3A on the rocker cover (if that is what it is called).

I'll get out the digicam sometime when it's daylight. Which won't be for a while, as the work pile is getting steeper by the day...

I have 3 distributors...one Cal and 2 Fed. ALL 3 have really loose shafts in them. Not so critical with electronic ignitions (no points) but they are really loose.

Somebody needs to forge ahead and try replacing the bushings in one and find out how to reliably test the coils and so forth. I'd almost be afraid to adjust the air gap to specs...the stator might start to hit the pickup coil.
