Alright. Ignition upgrades.
We have side-gapping. Apparently works in small engines, yet to test in the 3A-C
Pertronix Ignitor. Anyone used this? I've read some good things, thats for sure. Right now I need an improvement over points. It runs around $80-$100.
Crane Cams Electronic Ignition. Again, dunno too much about it. This is supposed to replace points as well, but is a box versus a little attachment. Only price I've seen is $105 at JCWhitney.
Dunno how either of the latter work.

Denso Iridium plugs. My cousin uses them in his 4Runner and absolutely loves them. He swears by them.

Bosch Platinum. Haven't heard much good except for out of the racing community.

Beck/Arnley Premium Plug Wires. Found them for $19.81 at RockAuto.com. Anyone have experience with them?

Magnecor 8.5mm cables. $35 for these. OVERKILL?

Can anyone else think of anything? Can anyone speak towards or away from any of these?

I just bought these wires at NAPA....

Mileage Plus Wires Spark Plug Wire Set - Mileage Plus MPW4340

Price: $ 14.99 ...not sure if they are spirally wound...fit well anyway.

Had Bosch single plats....tend to run hot if you advance the ignition. Cause pinging.

Since the coil is in the dist on this car...seems it's a little difficult to do an upgrade?

Best bet might be a set of NGKs...sidegapped??? If you are willing to replace them every 10K miles?

The PErtronix goes in place of the thing that spins and puts the sparks to the wires. I need to know what that is...
I dunno how the Crane Cams exterior computer type works.

I dunno why my 3A-C is different. I've got a different distributor to you guys. I've got a standard, Bosch four-cylinder unit.

The thing that spins around inside the distributor cap is called a rotor. The whole apparatus is called a distributor.

There's no real point in putting racing plugs into our cars, unless you're actually going to do racing. They're expensive and for the amount of time they're in there, probably won't work any better.

I'm not sure if side-gapping works better or not. I'll talk to a mate of mine who's in the racing industry here in Tasmania. Although, he's going to be on Targa Tasmania tomorrow and won't be contactable...

Electronic ignition is something I've been thinking about for my 3A-C at some stage. Then, from there, it's a damn small jump to EFI :D

Check out the Crane Cams Bosch points to electronic conversion. I have now spoken to a few of the racers at my church (yes, at my church) who say the Crane
Cams systems work well. They say MSD is a good bit better, but I can't find an MSD conversion. Besides that, the 3 times I called customer service today for info, the 3 different people I got at Crane were very nice and very helpful.

Our cars aren't points, they are electronic ignition but the kind that still uses a distributor and a mechanical / vacuum advance. The only difference is it has a transistor swtiching device instead of points. And the coil is built in. Perhaps we could use the signal from our distributors to run a standalone computerized ignition?

So wait a sec..... According to Crane, the points conversion works on the IIA ND distributor...? Would we not still need an optical trigger? Where can you "catch" the signal? How accurate is it? Will it fit up to a box?

What do you mean by internal coil?
Is the coil built into the distributor?

Because I can open my bonnet and point to the coil and coil leads separate from the distributor assembly...

Perhaps the Bosch is different? Ours does have an internal coil. At least the Nippondenso ones.
Perhaps the Bosch is points? I have no idea. heh.

My wires to straight to the distributor cap and there's no coil wire there, or coil that I've ever seen.

I don't either, but oh well.
So none can say how to do this? If it needs the optical trigger or can be wired as-is?
