there was actually quite a discussion about this a while ago. it started out talking about dry starts after oil changes but i think there was also info on priming rebuild engines. here's the thread.

I would put a small shot of fresh oil down each spark plug hole. And pull valve cover to get every thing wet with oil there to. But others may have better advice, I have never had the pleasure starting an engine for the first time.

when I get a fresh engine together, usually you have assembly lube on all the internal parts for the first start, I adjust the valves as one of the last steps, make sure there is assmbly lube on the cam, and than pour motor oil all over the rockers and cam. I have also had plenty of motor oil on the pistons and rings when I assembled it, but before start up, I unplug the distributor and crank the engine until the oil light goes out (I have a gauge and I watch for it to come off the peg). than I plug the distributor in and start the engine.

I have been told that is not necessary, but when I worked for a professional race team, we did something similar. The car had a dry sump oil system. We would slip the cog belt off the external oil pump and spin it by hand until the oil pressure gauge cam off the peg, put the belt on it and start it. that race engine was assembled with assembly lube as well, it always seemed like a good idea for all engines.

??? the 2wd engine is identical to the 4wd engine, the car is almost identical from the firewall forward. why would they tell you the 2wd 3ac is different than the 4wd 3ac?

How much are you willing to pay for fresh 3ac?
I was willing to pay 2K back 10 years but (as you know) I have no income..so its a non issue. Dunno why I was given the runaround..maybe I hit them when stock was low>?

A little update- and sorry in advance for the BUMP.
Motor is finally, finally, in. I'm kind of upset, to be honest, with myself with how slow I've been chipping at this car. I'm this way with all my projects however. haha
Once the motor was placed in, I towed it home where I will now finish up the little things. Fulids, adjusting the clutch, installing the carb, Purchasing couple more bolts. a little heres and theres.
I really want to have it finished before Christmas so I can install an inverter and decorate it with Christmas lights like I do for my jeep and gf's rabbit. :)

Jasper now has a 3ac core, hopefully they will rebuild it. So for anyone interested in a re manufactured motor..

I purchased the tires that I mentioned in a previous post. 195/75/r14 bfg t/a ko . These tires are load rang D and were the smallest tire I could find with all terrain tread. I was on the fence comparing size and weight. I could either have 27 inch lighter tires, or I could have smaller 25.5 inch tires that are heavier. I chose the smaller heavier ones for down the road ideas. I plan on using this set of tires mainly for off road and keeping the 13" wheels for daily use. I do enjoy decent fuel economy. Image

I picked up some path finder coils from the junk yard, I really don't want three inches of lift. Image
I'm thinking 1.5 of lift just to clear tires. Some how cutting coils doesn't sit right in my head. Anyone ever look into these for the rear? they fit pathfinder coils, which are the same diameter as tercels.

Also bought one of these, it matches my interior whoop whoop. I know it's nerdy, but I think i'll have alot of fun with it.

That's that for now. Wish I had a little bit more progression. Thanks guys for the first start up information. I bought some marvels mystery oil for the cylinder walls. Don't know if it's a good idea or not.

dlb-thank you so much for the write up and info. I'll definitely use yours for the instal. I noticed it in an 84 at pick and pull a while back but couldn't purchase it at the time. I got paid and went back to the yard, and notice that it was missing. I was so bummed out, because I came specifically for it. so I sat in the car for a while and looked up prices on my phone for items in the yard....then turned around and saw it sitting on the back seat half way taken apart with the cover missing. haha. I think someone thought it was broken since the meters weren't moving, and so they tried to take it apart.... honestly, I thought it was broken too....till I unlocked it. I took it to the counter and my favorite lady was at the register. She said "Today, it's a control module, and not a instrument cluster" I even told her that there was a cover on it, which cost extra.....but she insisted so, $27 with cover. I love her. My friends think it's too "me"

Gottolovem- I more than likely will need your help. I also need to get my bell housing too you. I was thinking the 27s at one point, but it's alot of work on the drive train, and I don't want to have that much lift just for tires. opens a door for way to much to go wrong. Thanks again for all your help man.

that's a really good price. i got one at a wrecker for $25 a few years back, and have bought a few more through the forum here for $50.

every male i gave a ride to in my tercel loved it too. they said it was like being in a plane...a slow, feeble, 62 hp plane. and i loved putting it in 4wd just to see the 4wd indicator light up. simple things, hey?

however, no female passengers i ever gave rides to had any interest in the inclinometer whatsoever. my wife thought it was very telling about men and our obsession with gadgets, switches, lights, etc.

Hey Gottolovem! Did you put your plow back on for the snow?! get any pics? I was wondering about that the other day.

Oh My Gosh, LOL. Yeah, I was about to put it down too after seeing it frozen. I was confident that it wasn't you, but had the urge to ask you if you called dibs or not just in case.

dlb- My girlfriend looked at it squarely for a a second, then said "Hmmm". However my friends thought the idea of being able to go up your best incline and then lock it till the next time you think you can beat your "score" a really fun challenge. I'm stoked by it too.

Most of the tercels I have owned have had inclinometers, they car kind of nerd-cool but really not that useful. If I ever am on an incline near the "limit" I will not be looking at the gage but trying to make sure the car stays wheels down!

My two daughters loved it when they were small, they would watch it go up and down as i go around turns or accelerate. I called it my accelerometer, measures g's in a turn. A friend of ours two boys also love to watch when I drive them around in my Tercel.

So, children love it, and adult men like it; what does that tell you about adult men?

Yes I used the snow plow to clear the parking lot and playground at the elementary school where I work last week.
It was alot of fun the first time I was able to really put it to use it doesn't work on gravel very well.
I waited till the sun made it a little slushy put around a 15 degree angle on the blade and I was throwing a ten foot rooster of slush  when my daughter was heading for her car I got her in the legs with a super slushy she didn't think it was funny for a couple hours
The principal of the school came out and said that I could bill the school for clearing the snow.
Around 50.000 sq ft. Took around 2 hrs.

Super hard on the car though and no picks next time for sure.
