I have an old school tach/dwell/volt/amp meter thing a co worker traded me for computer work!
I've been studying the FSM this morning, the TP adjustment makes sense.
The fast idle however, isn't even setting at all when cold, which is where I am not sure where to start for adjusting. Funny thing is when I started the car just now to test something, the fast idle kicked in, it was 45 degrees F instead of 30 degrees F. The wagon (Pokey) does the same thing, random fast idle, sometimes it gets set, most of the time it is not.
I was actually going to pop the little metal prongs out of the plastic connector and insert them back where they needed to go!

when you start the car, do you step on the throttle, take your foot off, and then start it? that is the proper way to set the fast idle cam when starting a carb'd car. almost everyone i have seen start carb'd cars holds the throttle down when they turn the key but i believe that releases the fast idle to the second step (and wastes fuel).

Re: Carb swap, pictures and issues
I was told when it is cold, to put the throttle to the floor twice, then start the car without giving it any gas. That usually works, sometimes when cold I have to give it some gas or else it just cranks with no indication of starting.
When the engine is hot however I usually have to give it some gas when starting or it just cranks, but that could be vapor lock?

If the fast idle is working intermittently, maybe you need to lubricate the linkage and work it manually. Could be sticky.
As for giving it gas to start the car warm, I do that most of the time. Unless you have to crank it excessively, it's probably ok. If vapour lock occurs, it is really hard to start, if at all. I have never had that problem yet with a tercel.

Re: Carb swap, pictures and issues
Driving around last night, going to different stores, after getting back into the car and cranking, it'll usually just crank. But if I stab the gas as I'm cranking she'll start right up.
When I was saying "vapor lock", what I thought was vapor lock, was the car taking up to 5 seconds to start this summer in 90-100 degree temps.
I'll try attacking both of them with some carb cleaner, what would you use to lubricate them? Silicone?

Not sure what to use, whatever I may have on hand. A light oil, sometimes after spraying the linkage with carb clean and everything gets freed up by hand, that might be enough. You don't need much and I usually wipe off the excess. I'm sure someone has better suggestions.

Re: Carb swap, pictures and issues
So I got off work, it was rainy and maybe 40F (4.4C).
Two full throttle presses, start car without gas, it hardly runs spluttering near stall rpms, so I turn her off.
One more full throttle press, car starts right up with the fast idle engaged!
Why would it do that?

Re: Carb swap, pictures and issues
Was almost 0F and the sedan started right up after three cranks this morning! Cranking was slow but she had been sitting since last thursday or so.
I love a properly working carb!
