I just took some pictures of a complete 4wd trans, and a 5 speed FWD trans side by side. look the same from the transfer case forward. I will be pulling it apart to see how it is differnt inside, but it dose look like if you swap over the main shafts it might be possible to convert a FWD trans to the 4wd.

That's a Z52F 3.73 final drive trans isn't it? We will probably have to resort to using FWD transmission parts to keep ours going as they become even harder to find in the future.

yes, the 4wd trans is out of an '83. I also have the later 4.11 trans, it was too much trouble to drag it over next to the 5 speed, almost identical looking on outside. The 5-speed came out of an '85, I do not know what the ring and pinion ratio is, it came out of a 2wd wagon.
