Trans would it ....

Post by Lil Beast »

I got a weird question about transmission!
Was wondering if could somehow make a 4sp t4wd trans. I'm not much of a trans expert more custom suspension!
I got a good running 4sp standard and a t4wd core thanks to Cornbinder!
As I'm looking exploded views of both trans, the main difference I can see is the CS bearing for the 4 and 5 speed trans have 2 different CS bearing size one is 56mm and the 60mm, the t4wd 60mm, a transfer case for 4wd and the EL gear.
I do have the 60mm CS 4sp, so could I simply put the transfer case on the 4sp or open up the t4wd change the internals with 4 sp kind a like the gear ratio better anyway, make sure the shift lever doesn't go in EL if don't work(no rebuilt available for the EL) and not in 5th aswell!
I do know that the t4wd 6sp and the fwd 5sp share the same overhaul kit as well (same #)! The trans housing are all 8 inchs! Could I replace the extension housing of the 4sp for the transfer case? That's what toyota did pretty much, right?

Then if you're wondering why? My budget is low and got to work with what I got for now! So would it be possible? Virtually does if you want my opinion! I'm gonna clean both, set-up a place to open it and post pics!

i am not positive
but i do not think one of the shafts in the 2wd tranny is long enough (on drivers side)
to convert to 4wd
i have taken both types apart but its been awhile
wait a minute
i misunderstood
t4wd 4 speed i have never seen

many parts are common to both trans, but I would be surprised if the transfer case would just bolt on to the back of the 5 speed housing. You would at least have to change the output shaft, which is longer on the 4wd trans. And the shift linkage is totally different. I suspect there are a number of other changes to deal with as well.

Get a large clean table and take the two trans apart side by side (but be careful not to mix up the parts). Than carefully compare to see if they can be swapped over. You might verify the part numbers of each of the mating parts from the parts list link.

If you are successful that would be really valuable information to know for us. It means there are more parts we can use to keep our Tercel4wd running. It would be good to know that if we can find a fwd 5-speed we can swap over the parts to make it work in our 4wd Tercels. Better loose the EL than the 4wd altogether. keep us posted. A photo documentation of the conversion would be a great addition to this list.

I haven't had the time to start dismantling yet! Got to finish the 4x4 I got in my tiny shop! Soon I will! Got to switch cab, kinda hell of a job! Later today I'll dig in my papers and post the pics and info I'm basing on!

I took a 85-88 tranny apart this week and also took a 83-84 tranny apart.
If you try this follow the FSM disassembly steps or you will have trouble getting it apart.
The 85-88 tranny has an extra threaded hole on top for the extra low gear switch (on Transfer Adapter case).
Otherwise the 4 aluminum cases look the same.

Inside, the shift forks are different (alum 85-88 vs steel 83-84).
The sleeves (what the shift forks move) are also different; 85-88’s have wider grooves.
Also the three shift fork shafts are different (very close but 85-88's have clearance hole for bolt and 83-84's have hole for pin that is smaller in diameter than 85-88’s bolt holes and in slightly different locations)

The Input shaft and its two bearings (one attached to shaft-the other located in tranny Intermediate Plate case are the same.
The Input shaft seal in the Intermediate Plate case was hard on both tranny’s (should be pliable) and needed to be replaced.

The gears and shafts look the same but I need to examine them further (count teeth).
I am taking lots of pictures at every step so I can put one back together someday.

both of these were the 4wd trans? It would be interesting to compare the 2wd 5-speed parts with the 4wd trans parts.

yes both were 5 speed 4wd with extra low (6th gear)
i did take a 2wd tranny apart but not sure how many speeds it had
that was 5 or 6 years ago
i still have the parts that matched with the 4wd trannys but they are mixed with other parts
and i could not recall which was which now
need to do it again
just need a tranny to dissect

Not dissin', but - let me know if you want the pix edited for brightness and to flip them; not evverbody would be able to d/l to effect this, I'm told.

Yeah ok! I see what you mean! Brightened looks better! Got lazy and used my phone, I could always use my good camera! I'll try with the other camera sometime in the next days! Feel free to edit them if you'd like !

I encountered a problem, though; with me downloading and flipping (not the brightening part though), suddenly the attached pix is reduced. An advantage - which I really like and have used for a couple of years - is to d/l from the PC to the site; this gives the viewer an opportunity to enlarge and view details on the thread by merely left-clicking.
Oddly, this has not been a prob doing the same thing to a couple of other members over the years. Dunno if it's your pix, which I doubt, as they are just .jpgs, same as mine, or whether it is my new 'puter with Windows 7 and Explorer 9 (old 'puter caught a nasty virus which killed the hard drive).
Will work on it over the weekend - your info is pretty good!

I just took some pictures of a complete 4wd trans, and a 5 speed FWD trans side by side. look the same from the transfer case forward. I will be pulling it apart to see how it is differnt inside, but it dose look like if you swap over the main shafts it might be possible to convert a FWD trans to the 4wd.
