how hard is it to take out the differential?

Post by Mac »

curious how long it would take to remove the differential.
-undo the driveshaft
-take out the axles
-unbolt the differential from the housing.

estimated time?

Remove the drive shaft, about 20 min (4 bolts, and tug on it hard to break it free)

Remove the axles, about 15 min each side IF the bearings are not rusted in place. Otherwise you will need a puller to break them free.

Unbolt the third member? I have never done that but I would guess about 1/2 hour, not counting draining it.

This also does not count putting the car on jack stands.

Do not remove the differential from the carrier, the proper clearance between the ring gear and pinion is critical and you do not want to change that. It takes adjusting the shims between the various parts in trial and error fashion.

If you just want to change the ratios or replace a bad one swap out the whole third member with the differential in it. You will have to clean the gasket face and put sealant on the new one.

Good luck

if you have it on a lift it takes about a half hour for the whole thing . it does not require shims to set the ring and pinon its threaded side loads on each side altho it is a pain in the ass to get it right again
