driving the beach...

Post by brianp »

So this past weekend, my family was camping on the coast, and I had the opportunity to drive my Tercel out on the beach. It was fun! :)

The pavement ended after it cut through the last dune before the ocean, and there was about 200 feet of soft sand before you could get to the wet sand of low tide. Pickup trucks had made ruts in it, but the middle was a bit too high for my tercel to clear. So I backed up about 80 feet, put it in 4wd, and gunned the engine in 1st. 8) I made it too! It was fun. Here are a couple pictures:

I did several donuts on the sand, and drove up the beach some.

After I was done, I opened the engine compartment, and found it was full of sand; probably when I was pushing through all the soft sand.

Those pictures are amazing to me. It's August. and it looks so cold and dreary there on the coast, and here in TN we're looking at upper 90's and maybe 100 degrees for the next week or two, and have basically had no measurable rainfall for the last 3 months, except for a couple of thunderstorms where we might have received 1/2 to 3/4" of rain.

Was it you that crashed the front of your car, brianp ?? if so, it looks like you got a great repair job on it !! or it could be that i'm getting senile and thinking about somebody else on the forum :)

Yeah, it wasn't raining that day, it was just overcast. It cleared up later on. :) Our temperatures have mostly been in the 70-80's this summer, with a week or two of 90's. The coast is always cooler though.

Yep, it was me who was in the wreck. I went to a junkyard, and found a 'new' hood off of another tercel, and put that on, along with the radiator support beam. I got another bumper as well, but I haven't put it on yet, as the current bumper is bent upwards, covering 2 of the bolts so I can't loosen them. I'm just going to have to rent a cutoff wheel sometime and cut the bolts. The front still isn't perfect; the grille and headlights are sort of bent inwards, and I had to readjust the lights to compensate. But it runs, so I'm happy. I just need to go take care of this oil leak now.

Man, the last few storms we've had have been nuts... One you literally could not see more than 2inches past a window for maybe 45 minutes. No joke. It had to have rained 3 inches. It was intense.

hahaha! No, that is my little brother, and he loves dressing up. He was wearing some WW II army surplus.
Did you have the stereo blasting the 'Ride of the Valkyries' when you were doing the donuts? (From the helicopter scene in Apocalypse Now) That would have been awesome.

(And how do you get the qutoees name in there?)

If you hit the 'quote' button on the upper right corner of the post of the person you want to quote, it does it automatically.

I finally got a video up of this:

(8.8MB)

Most of the filming is by my younger brother, he needed to hold the camera higher. :)

This is a bump for this thread, but I have a question.

Where is a map or a list of beaches in oregon with vehicle access? Some websites sayd Fish and wildlife has one, but I can't seem to find it...and it's annoying. I wanted to take the tercel out on the beach today.
