size (mm) of socket needed to loosen rear diff oil bolt to check oil

Does anyone know off hand? I don't want to round it off to much with a adjustable wrench

also is the breather(?... not quite sure) thingy on top of the rear diff meant to be loose?

Either a box end or 6 point socket....size?

Usually there is a small cap on those vents that sort of floats.
