RWD 4WD Terkle? :D

Post by jammin1911 »

Has anyone ever disconected the front driveshaft[s] and then thrown it in to 4wd for some rear-wheel drive tercel wagon action? is this even possible? I've never really looked at how its set up but I was thinking it would be fun in the snow ? :D

Someone linked a video with a tercel in apparently RWD. I think it was broken severely though.
Ill try to find the link... it was in this section down a couple pages.
Looked fun though :D

Removing the front CV joints will cause the front wheel bearings to collapse. Joy.

A long time ago, someone with a blown front diff was talking about how he drove it in 4wd (RWD due to no power to front) for 2 years before the rear blew out.

The holy grail of Terc's, in my mind, would be a compact, strong tranny that could shift from FWD, to 4WD, then RWD. FWD=economy. 4wd=utility. RWD= WEEEEE!!!

I have often thought about making a tercel rwd only
by removing front drive shafts but leaving the outer
cv joint in place to hold the front hub and wheel unit
together.remove 4wd gearbox and fit a rwd corolla
t50 5 speed gearbox, flywheel and clutch and link up to the
tailsaft modify if needed.not that simple but thats
the basics of it.

when i replaced my front driveshafts i didn't put them in the tranny all the way and one popped out when i was driving around the block.

I had to put it in 4wd to limp it home, and i decided to try out a EL burnout, the rear end hopped like a son of a bitch for the two seconds i was spinning the tires.

I've considered leaving both the inner and outer joints in with the shafts gone. I'm going to look into it more. Outer for the sake of holding the hub in 1 piece, inner for sealing the diff/tranny off. No shafts for obvious reasons. I'll probably ask my instructors about the feasibility of this. If it would work, then having the hub supported would allow the easy fitment of a RWD setup with returnability to 4wd.
Would change your alignment specs around though.

yeh it woks excellent. i took c clip off cv joint so that it still held the bearings in and took the shaft out with the inner tranny cv aswell. pretty hilarious on a wet night. definetly got a few weird looks. oh and best i ever got was second gear burnout after losing steam. that was on 15's aswell. but definetly dont recommend it for two long. pretty much killed the terk .
