Auto trans info needed

Post by Rick78EFI460 »

I have an 88 Tercel 4 WD with the 3 speed auto. lately it is sliding out of 3rd back into second with even light accel pressure. I did recently flush the transmission to see if that would help. I am looking for info on troubleshooting this transmission and possibly rebuild info and parts sources. Any information would be helpful

Welcome to the forum! First question... have you adjusted the throttle linkage?

You can find the Factory Service Manual on the main page. It has all info you need, as I doubt there were any changes to the A55F transmission in '88. It is an '85 FSM.

The link for the FSM is here:http://www.tercel4wd.com/1985_Manual.pdf. It is a big file so if you have dial-up it may be wise to use a download manager.

looks like a lot of transmission info to be had ! unfortunately my garage is full and the weather isn't co-operating so I haven't crawled under it yet.

After having a look I found throttle linkage out, so I re-adjsted it to spec.... no change, so it looks like I'll need to find a good used transmission or rebuild this one myself. There are not very many parts cars in these parts to chose from.

Someone recently had the exact same problem, but he deleted his text and his fix. I seem to remember he dismantled the valve body on his transmission and there was gunk all in the passeges. After cleaning it out the problems all went away.

Might try that before dishing out on a whole new tranny and the trouble of swapping them.....
