Diff jam

Post by foxtail »

When I press the diff lock button, the orange diff lock light comes on. Above 30km/h everything starts banging and shaking. One problem, After switching it off it wont disengage, the light stays on and I cant do over 30.

How do I unjam it??

Help!!

It sounds like your tires are different sizes (different manufacturer, difference in wear, different inflation...etc.). Beware, or something will blow up. You can un jam it by going in reverse very slowly while pushing the button (after you have been going forward). This will un-bind the drivetrain. CHECK YOUR TIRES!!!!!! And don't use your 4wd until you fix the problem.

Got in it this morning, light still on. Started reversing down the driveway and it all came good.

Thanks for that.

PS. Diff codes. F5-834. My Ae95 has this, I pulled the axels, and they are the same as S axels from AE86, but much longer. I pulled some from another F5-834 at the wreckers, and they were much bigger, similar to T axels but longer. To me the centre looks like a T but I havent measured it yet.

nope, I think Foxtail has whats known as a corolla wagon down hear in oz. They have the full time AWD set up and a centre diff lock as opposed to our FWD/4WD.

He does mention AE95 a couple of times. either way it probably would do the same thing in either car and lock up the centre diff.
Hey Foxtail, you only need to press that button in snow, really soft sand or where you have one wheel spinning and loosing traction. I really wouldn't use it on the road under normal conditions... It sounds like your car is trying to tell you something.

...that would be an option with our wagons? Weld the rear diff solid....so when in 4WD only one of the front wheels could spin.

Might break a rear axle on dry pavement though?

I have heard of a homemade spool with a cable actuator on an old monza.... I'm sure that some sort of selectable locker could be devised, but for what? Kamiphloj seems to take his tercel all over with no locker and no issue. If you NEED a locker to get there, a Terc is probably not the vehicle you should be taking.....

I've wished for a front and rear locker many times. Watching one front and the opposite rear tire spin is frustrating.

dont be silly, my tercel has gone plenty of places capable 4wd trucks couldnt go , so a locker would just make it that much more capable

I would have to say that YOU are a better driver than the drivers of those capable trucks, and that those trucks were not as capable as you make them out to be. Out here, I take my wrangler places where the rocks come up higher than the Terc's front bumber. The ground gets pretty muddy and slippery with the "Tillamook Clay" and even a jeep with a 6" LA lift, 35" BFG Mud Terrains and 4.56 diffs and 4:1 t-case with all 4 wheels locked can't seem to make it through without much difficulty. As I have only a LSD in the rear of my Jeep with 31" mudders and factory gearing, and I seem to go almost all the places where the big boys go, I can attest for the importance of the driver's skill and for how well a driver knows their rig. The most common problem I see for 4wd'ers is too much gas = not enough traction. Tires lose their grip from having too much torque applied and not being able to hold their ground.

With that said, the tercel is a very very capable rig; a great balance of power/torque and weight for offroad and loose surfaces. If a Tercel NEEDS a locker, it is probably not the vehicle that one should be out there in. Then again, it would be pretty sweet for a tercel to pull out a stuck jeep...........

Hrm, wonder if ARB's Air Locker for the Toyota pickups would be able to be squeezed into our diffs...
