Well at any rate. Maybe I could convince you to blend half-half. Lol. They are compatible.
Amsoil is rated for 100,000 miles in trannies and differetials.
25,000 miles in an engine. Of course the Super Duty bypass filter they offer must be changed at 12,500 mile intervals.
Tyrpus, I hear ya man. ;) Its just that I have never seen that stuff in Canada. Both 3AC and I live in Canada. I've heard only good things about it, but have never found it here. Thanks for your suggestion tho.

I've been having problems with my trans; difficult to put it into 3rd, so I took it to a trans shop, and the guy there said that the synchro for 3rd gear was probably worn out. He said I should try putting in some synchromesh transmission oil in there, and it should smooth it out. The stuff is made for some GM cars, but he said it should work in the tercel. What are your thoughts? Is there another oil that helps too? I've got some Ideas from this thread, but just thought I'd ask.

I'll probably do it this weekend.

I heard of using Redline synth gear oil.

What I'd do.....

* make sure the clutch is disengaging enough...adjust the sector & pawl...clutch pedal CAN be higher than the brake pedal.

* take the console covering the gear shift lever off and find the split in the boot over the trans...put about 1/3 cup of gear oil into the split...to get fancy...remove the lever and clean up the rust and grit. The shifter binds up and makes it seem like the trans is crapped out.

* IMO...it's probably better to go with 1/2 synth-1/2 regular gear oil and veer towards the heavier side 1/2 90W-1/2 140W.

why? trans with a lot of miles...leaking 4WD seal....rear seal...axle seals....with thin oil it's too easy to lose it before you know it...result...a trashed trans.

My vote is for Redline too. Just make sure you don't use a GL-5 oil if the manual requires a GL-4 oil. The GL-5 would be too slippery for the syncros to work properly. Redline MT90 is a 75W-90 weight oil specifically designed for manual trannys. Their MTL is similar but a 70W-80 weight which is probably a little thin for the Terk. I have used MT90 in a lot of manual trannys and have found it to shift better than any other oil, synthetic or conventional.

I know it is hard to get a GL-4 oil but don't use a GL-5 or GL-4/GL-5 dual rated oil in any tranny that specifies GL-4 oil.

Well, I must say that particularly when I first start my car in the morning the trans is hard to shift at first. In fact, today I almost didn't get it into reverse and its hard to get into 1st and will grind upshifting to 2nd. :) After I drive a few miles it generally does fine. As some of you may or may not remember I had a leak at the axle seal on the driver side last month. That is fixed now. The trans has 8w-90 oil in it now. Perhaps at some poitn I will try a different oil that will make it shift better. I am a little concerned when winter rolls around. Granted its not cold like Minnesota or Alaska or even Colorado but its still not uncommon to have a few 10 degree mornings on occasions and if its already hard to shift every morning in the summer than I can imagine what it will be at first on a cold winter morning. LOL

I've heard horror stories about Redline breaking down abnormally.

Go Amsoil. It is very much worth the little extra money.

GTSSportCoupe, what have been the long-term results with your trans with having put the Castrol synth in it. I see you originally said that it made a huge improvement. Just wondering how the improvement has held up over time for you. Want to get something better in my trans, and would like to know how its been over time from someone who has done it. I'm also in B.C., so would go with Castrol (I've used 'regular' Castrol motor oils exclusively for decades now and have no complaints). Any problems like those that have been posted about previously, i.e., seals that start leaking, or trans fluid that turns to liquid (as did 3AC-Power with Redline)?

Would appreciate any feedback/long -term results.

Thanks

Considering that these are old trans with a lot of miles...a case could be made for investing in an 12V oil pump and just changing out the oil every year with the correct grade of dino oil.

Not sure why there is an issue with a little gear grinding for the first 1/2 mile or so...doesn't hurt the trans....attempts to make this go away could shorten the life of the trans?

Yeah, I hear you loud and clear, takza, but, you know, always looking for the magic fix, for something just a little better.

Like someone I knew when I was a kid (really, I still am, just that my body sort of disguises the fact) - his philosophy was 'if it ain't broke, you can always make it better'. Have to say that it does get me in trouble at times, though...

I tried the amsoil is my 89 mr2 transaxle and I had issues shifting it . It was hard to shift and I think this was becuase the gears are moving fast due to a better slicker oil and it was hard for the gears to mesh . So I drained the amsoil and just put in valvoline gear oil and change it evey 30 thousand miles . When I replaced the tranny in the terc I installed new factory toyota axle seal's and the tail shaft seal and I just used the same valvoline gear oil 80w-90w. I also have a little stif shifting first thing in the morning but it it does just fine a few miles later . I will change to Amsoil here in the next month or so to see if it will help at all . I use Amsoil motor oil in all my cars and my big truck and I will never use anything else . I have seen and heard about the bad issues with Redline and most of these failures were do to water contamination and condensation break down in transmission and axles in 4x4s that had been wheeled in mud and gone thru water and another was a gsxr 750 race bike that had sat during the winter and after it was ran for awhile it spun a bearing and it was due to the condensation in the motor That the oil could not combat . my Mr2 has over 211,000 on it now and Still uses no oil and does not smoke and the motor is just as strong as it was with 100 thousand on it . Good luck .
