Re: No spark on 83 tercel
I’ll try it that way but my understanding is that if both can and crank marks are at tdc it should be compression stroke ?i had to make almost 2 complete revolutions for both to line up I wanted to check that t-belt was installed properly. It is…I feel like this car will be the death of me. I also ...

Re: No spark on 83 tercel
You might be at TDC but on the exhaust stroke. Plug the #1 spark hole with your thumb while you crank the engine clockwise using a ratchet on the crank pulley bolt. When you feel pressure build up under your thumb as the piston reaches TDC, you know you are on the combustion stroke. NOW REMOVE THE R...

Re: No spark on 83 tercel
Glad to hear you finally got it sorted out. I'm sure we've all done similar things a number of times so you're in good company here.

Re: No spark on 83 tercel
I've never heard of the ECM causing a no spark or any other kind of no run situation with these cars so I don't think that's your issue. I'm not clear on whether you actually installed the second distributor, did you do that or did you just bench test it? I honestly find a lot of the FSM test proced...

Re: Starter works intermittently
I just thought of something else to look for. Check all the wires that go to the starter and battery and look for breaks. I used to have a 1991 VW Passat that would intermittently run terribly, most of the time it was totally fine but occasionally it would start bucking hard. I spent months looking ...

Re: Starter works intermittently
Did you also check the ground where the battery connects to the frame?

Agreed with the other lads. Clean and tighten all connections for the battery and starter.

Re: Input shaft gear/idler gear failure
Ran low on oil is my guess. That part sits at the highest point in the trans so it's the first to be affected by low gear oil. Others here have more experience with this than I do though so we'll see what they say.

Re: Damaged input shaft bearing?
Sorry rkdoty, that's a bummer. How many litres came out of the trans? I went through the same thing with my most recent Tercel. I had another trans but it was from an '83 so it had the different gearing. Had to swap diffs before putting it back in the car. Be aware that you might have to do the same...

Re: Damaged input shaft bearing?
I have only removed and reinstalled the trans and diff together a number of times, but I use a big rolling jack to do so. I'd probably look at separating the trans and diff if I were in a different working situation.

Re: Damaged input shaft bearing?
I agree that sounds like the input shaft bearing. I think there are two on this trans, one that is accessed from the outside and one you can only access by disassembling the trans. I'm not positive about that though so do a search here for more on that. Anyway, have you checked the transmission oil ...

Re: Potential high idle solution
I think I've seen the VTV removed from the equation at least once but wasn't sure why a former owner would have done that. Now I think maybe they ran into the same thing as you.

Re: likelihood of missing water pump blades/fins?
That's a good idea about the laser thermometer. I've never had one but have run into a handful of situations over the years where I could have used one so I think it's time I finally pick one up. But also, I remembered that my thermostat has acted up a few times over the last several months and made...

likelihood of missing water pump blades/fins?
I installed the current water pump on my car within the last few years but I don't know what brand it is. Never had a problem with running hot since I installed it (the gauge always read from about 1/3-1/2) but I swapped clusters and the current cluster shows the temp 1/2-2/3 on the gauge. At first ...

Re: What year Tercel do I buy.
If one of the CV axles is blown, that will also cause a lack of drive to the front wheels. So I would inspect those before writing off the front diff. If you need an axle, DO NOT buy anything remanufactured. Most of the are junk. Rock Auto has several new axles that are decent, although I think peop...
