Re: Leaking coolant

That's the coolant bypass tube. It has o-rings at both ends, they are leaking. To remove it, you have to drain the coolant, remove the upper rad hose, and undo the two bolts that secure the aluminum outlet piece to the block. Easiest way to find the right size of o-ring is to get a big set of them (...

I agree with confirming all diaphragms hold vacuum, but I just suck on the hoses to them with my mouth. I'm a filthy hick, it's true, but it works.

Re: 83 engine vacuum line locations

I've heard of 'dwell' but don't actually know what it is. I don't think it's something you can check, or need to check, on this car. Have you checked the FSM? It has lots of info on vacuum lines in the emissions section. You can download it here: https://tercel4wd.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=...

Looking back on this thread, I agree that motor mounts are the most likely cause of a vibration at idle. Have you checked yours?

Re: It starts but doesn't idle or stay running

I agree with Chris, your idle doesn't sound too bad to me. And the light smoke you describe sounds like it might be normal engine vapors. Just to be sure though, I would do a compression test to see if your rings or valves might be worn.

Re: cam type bolt in upper strut bolt location

Nice, good work! I know what you mean, I hate finding those kinds of shitty "repairs" on vehicles. On my current Tercel, virtually everything was like that and it drove me nuts to think of them doing one sloppy, slapdash job after another, thinking they're improving the car when they're re...

Re: Front Differential Parts

I would check the gear oil level (the trans and diff share the same oil) but as long as it's full (it should be right up to the bottom of the fill plug which is the 24 mm shallow bolt head just behind the driver side CV axle) I wouldn't drain it just yet.

Re: Front Differential Parts

Based on those sounds and what you described in your first post, it sounds like you might just have a failed CV axle up front, not a destroyed front diff. I would remove the one that seems suspect (look for anything obviously wrong, see if you can spin the axle even when the transmission is in gear,...

Weird. Look and sounds like a home job fix. I would get the correct stock parts from a wrecker, parts car, etc personally.

Weird. Are you using a torque wrench? If so I wonder if it's way out of spec.

Re: Battery light wont go out but battery is charging

What is an IC regulator?

There are two types of alternators for these cars: internally and externally regulated. Most of them are internally regulated. I have heard of people accidentally putting in the wrong type of alternator and having problems from that. Could that be a possibility here?

Re: It starts but doesn't idle or stay running

When I first turn the key to the lock position it comes on on the dash but once I started it doesn't come on That's normal. If it flickers or comes on at idle once the engine is warmed up, that indicates either low oil pressure or a faulty oil pressure sender, so it sounds like your oil pressure is...

Re: It starts but doesn't idle or stay running

To check the oil pressure, you need to get an oil pressure gauge and an adapter. Then you remove the oil pressure sender from the block (it's the big funny-looking nut by the oil filter), put the adapter in, then connect the oil pressure gauge fitting. Let the engine warm up to normal operating temp...
