Re: e-brake

Agreed with Mark. First thing is to check your brake fluid level. If it's fine, I would also check the voltage at the battery when the car is running. Park brake and battery light being on means the alternator is not charging the battery. I know you didn't mention the battery light but it's much mor...

Re: observations on my first t4 transmission disassembly

If the oil is getting dark quickly, you have a bearing thats getting hot and scorching the oil. you need to find the bad bearing and replace it asap before it nukes the trans. Interesting! I have already reassembled the dirty oil trans but if I ever need it in the future, I will remember this and f...

observations on my first t4 transmission disassembly

Since I got my latest tercel, it has occasionally had some problems shifting. The problem is weird: every now and then, I wouldn't be able to get the shifter far enough to the left to get it into 1st or 2nd. Other times I wouldn't be able to get it far enough to the right to get into 5th or reverse....

Re: Collapsed Rings? Bad idle..

Amen, the fb group is good for fast responses but unfortunately most of those responses tend to be useless. I agree with Paul re: doing a compression test, and vacuum leaks being the cause of your hunting idle. I imagine the rings are fine but a compression test will confirm that. Confirm you have t...

Re: Carburetor mounting gaskets

I looked at this last time I rebuilt a carb and IIRC, the correct gasket has a little tale coming off the hole for either the primary or secondary barrel, and that tale matches the shape of the phenolic spacer. I might have that backwards, maybe it's the base of the carb and not the spacer, but anyw...

Re: eBay northwestern Iowa -- parting out '83 T4WD SR5 wagon

This one has been up for a while. I was going to buy the inclinometer from the seller back in April but then I found one cheaper elsewhere. Seller was a little slow to respond to messages but seemed honest.

Re: Fuel problem? Timing issue? Won't stay running

I don't see fuel filter in your list of work done. If you haven't done that it's the first thing I would do. Make sure to get a clear one so you can see if the tank is puking rust and junk. After sitting for 10 years, that's quite possible.

Re: 84 T4WD project (front axles)

Hi Phatcat. Those symptoms are odd, because if the right axle is bad, it will click or clunk when you turn left while driving. But the fact that it's growling makes it sound like a bearing. But bad bearings usually don't make much noise at low speeds, then make more the faster you go, and if it's a ...

Re: The Tersailor (REBUILDING)

Sorry, to clarify I wasn't suggesting you bought the cheapest kit. I was saying that if it wasn't the cheapest one on Rock Auto, I would imagine the kit you bought is probably just fine. Agreed on product reviews, as long as you can be relatively sure the reviews aren't written by bots. You mentione...

Re: The Tersailor (REBUILDING)

I personally don't put a lot of stock in where something was made, because I've bought plenty of good China, Taiwan, etc-made parts. I think it's more a matter of you get what you pay for -- if you buy something that is cheap, it's going to be cheaply made, regardless of whether it was built here or...

Re: Front and rear seats

When you sew it, it will probably be easiest to remove the fabric and turn it inside out to repair it. I had a friend do some sewing repairs on some seats for me years ago, turned out great. Anyway, removing the seat covers is a little annoying but if you only have to do one seat that shouldn't take...

Re: Aluminum plunger in carburetor

I am going to try to figure out how to post pictures and point to to hole it goes into... To post pics, click 'full editor & preview,' then below the typing field click on the 'attachments' tab, then click the 'add files' button, pick the pics you want to upload, then hit the 'place inline' but...

Re: Aluminum plunger in carburetor

I'm not sure which plunger you are referring to. Did you use a rebuild kit, and if so, what did it call the part?

Re: Front and rear seats

$200 is fair if they're in good shape. If they're just dirty that's ok, you can use a little rug doctor to clean them up nicely. But if they're torn to shit, they're not worth anything IMO.
