Two questions about the T4:
Is the steering ratio on the power rack any different from the manual rack? Are they both something like 20:1?
What is the ratio for 5th gear? 0.8:1?
Not technically a "repair" question, but definitely a technical question... still, feel free to move to general if you think you should.

Re: Steering rack ratios (power v. manual) and top gear rati
i'm not sure about the steering rack ratios but yes, they are different. i disabled the PS on a terc once and it was quite a bit harder to turn, whereas i had one terc with manual steering and didn't even realize it until i was in a parking lot. even then it wasn't obvious or remotely difficult to turn. i just thought "this feels different." got home and looked, no power steering equipment. my dream terc will have manual steering—one less piece of equipment to maintain, more room in the engine bay, and less work for the already feeble 62-hp engine.
as for 5th gear ratio, according to this old post by forum OG gtssportscoupe, it is .825 for both the 83/84's and 85-88's. which seems weird to me because my '84 sounded to me like it rev'd lower at highway speeds. maybe someone else can confirm that gtssportscoupe's info is correct.

Re: Steering rack ratios (power v. manual) and top gear rati
Snyth knows about this because he swapped in a manual MR2 steering rack, which is a higher ratio (faster steering) than the Tercel manual rack. The mr2 has much less weight on the front wheels, so it has a fast ratio and no power steering.
the power steering is a real thumb saver on rough roads (where I drive daily), it helps you keep the wheels pointed straight ahead. the lower ratio manual rack tends to kick back fairly hard on pot holes, etc. to help combat this I increased the castor by putting some rubber washers behind the sway bar end bushing to pull the lower arm forward a bit.
