Tie rod replacement

Post by danpan »

The front drivers side makes a loud popping noise as I steer or go
over large bumps(this is in the area of the front wheel).
Could this be the tie rod, which seems loose? Would it be the inner or outer tie rod?

if you jack up the car so tire is off the ground
push / pull front side of tire
if there is movement that makes noise
remove tire
grab tie rod and push pull
if there is movement with sound determine which end (inner or outer) moves
most likely it will be the inner tie rod
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

I normally have someone rock the steering against the stop each way. The worn tie rod will "hop" when doing this. When you replace the bad tie rod count the number of turns it takes to remove the old one, put the new one on with the same number of turns it took for removing the old one.

here's a great guide on how to check and adjust the alignment. good idea to do so after replacing inner or outer tie rods, even with counting turns or making marks.
