Silvertop swap into 1985 SR5 Tercel A/T?

Post by Godspeed Oakland »

So I have the Silvertop ready to go, and instead of making a custom flywheel to make the new engine with the new 6-speed tranny, I am just gonna bolt it up to the rebuilt stock 3-speed automatic tranny. This combo should fit together without the need of a modified flywheel. Is this True? I will use a stand alone AEM or Mega-Squirt F/I system to run the new Silvertop. Should be a huge improvement over the stock 58HP 3A Carbed engine. I was told the 4AE Silvertop would bolt up to the stock '85 Automatic. Does this sound viable? If not I'll just rebuild the stock 3A Engine & Tranny with Webers and be happy. Thanks!

I'm not sure but I believe that the flex plate (flywheel) will still need to be modified to bolt on to the s/t crank which should be drilled for a 8 bolt pattern , the stock3ac is a 6 bolt setup .you'll halve to check to see if the s/t flex plate will fit(I think you'll find that the S/t flex plate wont fit in the bellhousing, also the starter gears wont line up,you'll half to do some checking. Keep us posted . Larry

I doubt it would fit, as larry says, it will still need the flex plate with the 8 hole bolt pattern. If you can find a flex plate for an auto trans silver top 4age, it will have the 8-bolt hole pattern, bu likely will be larger dia for a larger trans. If they ever made an auto trans for the silver top. but, the silver top flex plate, if you can find one, would likely be easier to modifly to fit the Tercel auto trans torque converter.

I think an auto trans tercel with a 4age would not likely hold up very well. they barely handle the stock 62 hp without problems, more than double the hp it seems to me would be asking for trouble. You will want a really larger after market trans cooler too.

Thanks guys. I may just sell off the '85 SR5 6-Speed M/T and the Silvertop. Then I'll just rebuild the stock engine and Tranny and add headers and Webers. That will get me to 80HP and that's all I'll need here in Santa Fe at 7k feet altitude.

doing a 4ac swap is an easy way to get more power, it is an easy bolt-in swap. with a header, the weber and the Delta Cams regrind it should give you plenty of power without too much effort.

Doing the silver top swap is a major undertaking, lots of parts to fab/mod to make it all fit.
