Is there supposed to be a gasket on the small metal tube going fron the water outlet housing to the water pump?

There should be an o-ring on each end. Mine is leaking right now...gotta replace the o-rings.

right after I wrote, I found it, walked to the hardware store, and found one. No more leak. Horray!!

remember there are different materias for orings the best in that aplication are silicon o rings, highest temp rating
tercel 4wd custom suspension, under drive pulley, vented brakes, cold air intake, and plenty more to come

That O-ring is a real pain. The ones in the hardware store will fit. If you are lucky it will last until you change the thermostat. My temporary hardware o-ring lasted 2 years.
