Has anyone replaced a hand brake cable?-Disregard-Done!

Post by Highlander »

The wife's T4 has been having some trouble with the parking brake holding, since she's away for a bit, thought I'd take care of some things. New flexy front brake lines, ceramic pads, started in on the parking brake, and the cable is stuck in the housing. Now I have another whole backing plate, etc from the wrecked car, but am having trouble removing the cable housing from the backing plate. I've tried hose clamps, but they don't have enough oomph to pull the locking tabs in. Any brilliant ideas? :?:
Its hard to hold three tabs down when they're diametrically opposed to one another, never mind the fact that one is always covered by the backing plate

What you do is push one tab in with a screwdriver and wiggle the cable so that tab is now in the hole and work your way around. Sometimes it takes a try or two but always works for me. If that doesn't work, using two screwdrivers at the same time usually does it. With the cable disconnected from the car, you can rotate it around as you get the tabs free. Good luck.

Thanks, I got it, with the cable frozen inside the housing, rotating it wasn't possible. The hose clamp helped hold the first one down, I just had to get serious with it I guess.
Worse than that was the little guide grommet up by the balance bar-that took a while to get out as it was stiff and dry. All good now, it even self-adjusts!
