86 Tercel 4wd with Custom Cargo Carrier

Post by T4WDOR »

Some info on the car, his name is Peter. i rescued it from Klamath Falls(like 2 hours from where i live) for $400. It had a blown head gasket and piston wall damage. So i swapped the engine with another tercel i had sitting around with a toasted transmission. Took 2 days to swap, and after some tinkering it now runs good. It has a small vacuum leak that i can't find, causing a bit of a rough idle, and the engine shock absorber is too short to bolt back on.
But it turns out the new engine was a 3a-scv, the car is a California emissions car, I cant stand it. But i didnt even realize what the engine was until i had it in already. I'm pretty stoked because i think they are 90hp. It is definitely faster than my other Terc with a 3a.

The car is a 6 speed, good tranny and handles very well. I just wish it had a Tachometer(its not an sr5). It just hit 215,000, not sure how many miles are on the engine, i would guess between 100k and 170k. And the AirCon works wonderfully!

Next weekend i'm going to Eastern Oregon (Strawberry Lake) to watch the meteor shower and hang out at the hot springs. I will document that trip and make a post about it.

However i will probably sell the car in 2 months to fund some Traveling. It will be missed greatly. But if anyone is interested feel free to PM me, the goal is to drive it a little while and sell it by Sep 1st.

that looks great. good work on saving it and keeping yet anther terc on the road.

for the vac leak causing rough idle, check all the diaphragms (vac advance, throttle positioner, choke opener, choke breaker, EGR, etc). put a hose on each one and suck. they should all hold vacuum. if you can suck air through any of them, leave them disconnected and plugged until you get around to replacing them. also try disconnecting and plugging the hose in from the charcoal canister. when the charcoal breaks down, it can let too much fresh air through and act as a vacuum leak too.

the EGR itself (not just its diaphragm) is another common source of leak because the pintle shaft either gets worn and can't seal or gets carbon buildup around it and can't seal. the only way to determine if the EGR is leaking is to remove it from the intake manifold and make a block-off plate to cover the hole, and to use a short 24mm x 1.5 mm bolt (common transmission plug) to plug the hole in the exhaust manifold that normally runs to the EGR. it's a bit more work so i would test everything else first.

Ill definitely try the diaphragms. I have tried to find it with carb cleaner, and the idle smooths out when i do spray the cleaner. So i feel like there is still an external leak, opposed to diaphragm problems.
