Missing HAI hot air hose?

Post by JesseN »

Hello everyone,

Something has been bugging me for a while now since owning my Terc. Have been noticing this big opening on the engine that's missing a hose. Looking at the FSM I am missing the hose that brings hot air from the engine during cold conditions into the air cleaner. A few questions.

1. Why would someone remove this hose? Would having it connected cause any trouble as to removing it would be a work around?
2. What can I use to replace this missing hose? Using the original Part number of 17881 comes up with many different Toyota hose designs. Would a HVAC hose work?
3. Will this improve my cold morning running?
4. Should I make a big deal of trying to find this hose or do you roll without it?

Thanks so much,

Jesse

that draws warm air off the outside of the exhaust manifold to keep the incoming air at a relatively high temp mostly for emissions control reasons. The controller is the device on the bottom of the aircleaner assembly, the flap valve is vacuum operated. You will not likely notice any difference in drivablity, unless you drove in really cold and icy conditions all the time, it might help prevent carb icing. I have mine disables so I always get cold air from the intake next to the head light. Cold air is more efficient because it is more dense. If you want the system to operate the hose can be bought from any auto parts store, they sell them at Autozone for example. it is just a generic flex hose of the correct dia.

Actually, that eBay link has now expired... and the cheapest price is now a bit more, at $8.22 with free shipping.

Just do an eBay search for DORMAN 96038 and sort the results by lowest price.
