Tercel 4wd & Corolla SR5 same rear end?
I have a recently bought an '87 ae86 who's rear end is pretty much gone (leaking out all the oil and whizzing). I am looking to replace the whole rear end housing but these tough to find at the junkyard or rebuild kits. I have seen few post with people asking about swapping Tercel rear end for ae86 GTS ones. Also I currently have a 3A engine instead of a 4AC, which originally gave me the idea. My question is does anybody know if any 4WD Tercels are a direct fit to an 1987 RWD Corolla SR5? Any info would be a great help thanks!

some of them are interchangable (i bought one for an 83 tercel that was marked corolla and it was 3.73 gear ratio)
but i would have a wrecking yard do a cross check
got to get right gear ratio too
count teeth on ring gear and divide by number of teeth on pinion gear

Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

I think it should interchange, count the bolts on the third member (the center diff carrier) where it bolts to the axle housing, if they are the same it will interchange. Also, check the rear axle on the corolla All-trac AWD version of the corolla, it has a 4.1:1 rear end ratio. It should also interchange. The Tercel4wd uses the older rwd corolla rear axle, in the Tercel it came with a 3.73:1 rear ratio in the manual trans '83-84, and 4.1:1 in the manual trans '85-87 Tercel4wd. The auto trans have different ratio again. The ratio is not as important for you since you do not have 4wd, but the 4.1:1 will give you the best performance, but the 3.73:1 will allow the engine to run at lower rpms at hwy speeds so it is not as noisy.
Do you need a whole rear axle assembly, or just the differentical? I might have an extra diff somewhere, but it would be better if you can find one locally.
Good luck.

Re: Tercel 4wd & Corolla SR5 same rear end?
Are the AE86 Corolla and All Trac Corolla the only other rwd Toys that have interchangeable rear ends with a T4? Is the earlier Corolla (with 1T engine I believe) the same? I'm referring to the really square looking cars from circa '78 through '83 (?). Any of these models will be fairly tough to find in local j-yards so I want to increase my chances.
My rear axle has a bad wheel bearing which I think machined the axle. At any rate lotsa gear oil leaked out at the wheel and it may be easier/cheaper to replace the axle since I need to replace the brakes including all hardware and soft lines. Thanks for any help.

It's a scientific fact that in a twin engine aircraft, when one engine fails there is always enough power in the remaining engine to make it all the way to the crash site.

What about the Starlet? There happens to be a fresh '82 around.

I think they are the all the same, but you can double check this assumption by spending some time on an after market parts web site and check wheel axle bearings, diff bearings, etc part numbers for the different models/years. Toyota gives them different numbers so people to do not attempt interchangeability, but the after market suppliers have no such concerns.
It is not difficult to just remove the axle and take it to an auto machine shop and have them press out the old bearing and install a new one for you. this is much easier than replacing the whole axle assembly (which may have bad rear bearings anyway since it was in a wrecking yard). You will need a new rear seal, easy install. your axle is likely just fine, the bearing gets chewed up and than allows the axle to wobble, wiping out the seal and possibly the drum and brake shoes as well.

Re: Tercel 4wd & Corolla SR5 same rear end?
Thanks for the info Petros, sounds like trying to fix my axle is the way to go. Is there a way to verify the axle is good before I remove it, i.e. take some micrometer measurements?

you will have to pull it to verify it's ok danzo but with the design of the bearing it's pretty difficult to damage the axle. the last bearing i did was totally destroyed but the axle was fine. you can see it in these pics.
