Got a 1985 tercel wagon 4wd recently and it had been diagnosed with a bad front differential. The previous owner drove it for 3 yrs that way and all it does is make a grinding noise. Anyway, I assume that I need to pull the tranny and such to get at it. Would it be easier to pull the entire engine and tranny? What I really need to know is what used diff. can I put in? Are non-4wd tercels the same?
The car is fairly clean and ony has 135K on the clock. It runs great and shifts fine so I figure I can put some time and money into it.

I have a wagon with a bad front diff. I took it apart and found out the ring and pinion are fine and it's only the side gears that are chewed up. These can be taken off any Tercel differential from a similar year, including automatics. You can get the differential carrier out if you remove the steering rack. If you need to change the pinion, you will have to pull the transmission. The ring and pinion if you need them will have to be from another 85-88 4WD wagon because they are the only ones with the 4.10 gear ratio.
