I need a fast idle cam. can anybody help?

Post by trailerparkzero »

Hi All,
Last week I just bought a 85 tercel sr5. its has 98k miles and is in great shape!
its only been a week and I already have issues but i'm in love.
Sorry if there is a lot of repair talk i will cross post there but i was hoping somebody might have a old carb they could sell a few parts to me.
She ran fine the first to days the one day i noticed the idle was high and it was dieseling on shut off.

Now it stars ruff then warms up and gets stuck at high idle (2,000rpm) and still dieseling. I know that its likely dieseling from the high idle(thanks FSM :P ).

I have found 2 things wrong and have some hope for her (thanks to all the info on this forum and whoever posted the FSM pdf).

The screw that hold the fast idle cam must have been lose and fell off so now I'm missing the screw, cam and washers. All I have is the piece with the tab that moves the cam because it is connected to the brass bar that moves it.
can anybody point me in a good direction for finding one of these or possible help a newb out?

While troubleshooting I noticed the my TVSV is slightly loose at its base. should i attempt repair with some RTV or just try and find a replacement?

Welcome to the list!

I likely have a carb you can use for parts, it came off a running car but it has some issues, I will have to go through my boxes of parts. It would be a good carb for parts or you can rebuild it. If I have one for you, how does $25 plus shipping sound?

You can seal up the TVSV with RTV, but you should also check it for proper operation per the FSM. Replace it if it fails the test.

You also should check for vacuum leaks and misrouted vac lines, just follow each one according to your type of vac diagram, check for cracks or disconnected lines. Also, you can use carb spray on a running engine to see if there is a leak, spary it at differnt places and over the gaskets and vac lines, if the idle speed chagnes when you spray it at one spot, that is the place where the vac leak is located. BTW, sometimes the manifold bolts work loose and cause a vac leak at the gasket, so check the manifold bolts/nuts for tightness.

Good luck!

Sounds good to me. If you have PayPal PM me your info and what you need for shipping and I will send it to you asap. If you dont have paypal let me know the best way.

Thanks for the tips I will pick up some carb cleaner this weekend and see what I can find.

forum member 4doorVIP recently got a few brand new TVSVs so if you can't fix yours, you might send him a PM to see how much he wants for one. most old ones are worn out and only work on cold and medium settings, and won't open fully for the hot setting. this doesn't really affect driveability but it does affect mileage by always supplying vacuum to the AAP, which in turns causes rich running and wastes fuel.

Hey 4doorVIP, I ended up buying a new TVSV from the dealer for right around $150, I couldn't find anything aftermarket. What brand are the aftermarket ones that you are selling? Do you know if they are still available in the aftermarket parts world still.

I don't need one but it would be nice to know if they can still be gotten down the road outside of the dealership. It is nice to know that Toyota still offers them though.

WOW - $150 for a TVSV from a Toy dealer?
I got mine for $92 from Butler Toy in Indy; of course, that was in '05, but I would not have imagined it went up that high! Of course, Butler's pricing has always been a lot less than most other Toy dealers (Conicelli in PA and Village in Fl also have low-low prices).

The current price from Village in FL is $114; I'd imagine Butler and Conicelli would be similar.

4doorvip's $50 hookup is sounding better and better. i am running one of his TVSV's in the completed project car and it works well. i even tested it using the FSM procedure before i put it in the car, just to be safe.

i can't remember but i'm not sure if i even saw a logo or brand on it. i just looked to confirm the lettered ports on it, stuck it in the pot of hot water, and then put it in the car. maybe 4doorvip will see this and answer.
