Well, on my way into town the 2nd time today, with a slightly tailing crosswind of about 10-30 MPH, I pegged the tar out of the 84's Speedo. I got to 4250 RPM in 5th. No idea how fast this is, but it was a bit more intimidating in the 84 than in the 86.

So your 84 isn't running so bad anymore?

I usually take it easy in order to save fuel (and rear wheels + axles) but sunday I didn't want to be late for my sister's harp concert to raise funds for a missions trip, and realizing I was short on time I went 130 for about 100 kilometers. I got there on time to the minute. Of course I was going 90 for the first part of the trip, until there was a traffic jam that screwed things up and made me go faster the rest of the way. I'm glad the wheel didn't fall off at 130 in the left lane, then I would have missed the concert and/or died.

It still has no top-end, barely runs with high alternator load or with A/C on, doesn't like to idle long (sometimes at all), has essentally no power right off idle on initial throttle push, so it has to be revved before the clutch is released. It still isn't running like it did in the 86, but it is FAR better than it was. I still think I need a new carb and dist.

If you have no centrifugal advance and a bad coil...you have problems?

We replaced the dist with the one off the dead engine. It has no vacuum advance, but the coil is in working order and there is nothing wrong with the centri.

Lack of vac advance would cause an idle problem cause that's when it is advanced the most....or when vac advance is most needed.

You also have an '86 dist on a '84 engine? Might be differences?

NAPA makes a good rebuild kit for the carb...plus a float.....also test all the diaphrams and so forth around the carb?

The 1984 body has the engine from the 1986 in it. Not the other way around.
The dist WAS the same I was using before, but the mechanical advance got buggered up in the swap somehow, so now the 86 engine is running with an 84 distri that has a good coil, good mechan, but bad vacuum. And yes, I do have some issues with keeping the idle alive.
I intend to put in a Weber when the money comes up. I don't feel the want to rebuild, I just want something that I know will be a good power boost, which is something I love.
