I've always wanted one of these. I'd keep the 3A-C but mod it, and strip and paint it gloss black, tint the windows, and put some nice GT-S or similar front seats in it.
I saw an 81 SR5 hatch for sale locally with 60,000 km in near perfect shape, but it only weeks earlier I had bought an 89 Tercel coupe, which turned out to be crap, for the same price, as I was impatient to get a car! Been kicking myself ever since.
If it works out, I'd take this to the swap meet instead of my wagon.
Might be getting an 82 SR5 hatch

We got it pretty easy in Australia
Go here: http://www.tradingpost.com.au and do a search for tercel (all states)
(they are all 83-87 4wd Wagons cos that's all we got over here!) and remember that the aussie dollar is worth about 75cents american.
and remember it's pretty hot and dry, virtually no rust* making conditions
Read and weep guys!
Cheers! Matt
*meaning some cars actually have no rust!

for $10 you cant go wrong! i doubt its anything very difficult to fix, probably something as simple as a bad fuel pump.
and the oil leaking from the pan that occured right after an oil change is 99% likeley that it has the wrong drain plug washer.

I have it figured out - the unofficial guide to importing a car from USA to Canada:
1. Buy a junker car of the same type locally and remove the serial number plate
2. Register the junker and insure it and get a temporary permit
3. Rent a car for a one way trip to where the new car is.
4. Go across the border with the rental car and whatever parts you need to make the new car run, and then some other parts and of course your legitimate serial number. The purpose of the trip is to buy car parts (true).
5. Pick up the new car, swap the serial and other parts if necessary, and return the rental
6. Return home in the new car with your temp permit and proof of insurance. The purpose of your trip was to buy car parts, and you have the parts to show for it.
I'll probably skip steps 1 and 2 at least for now. I've read official guides, and this one is alot more straightforward and involves less fees to be paid.
I went to see a guy with an ad in the paper for 2 1981 Tercels, and when I got there it turns out he had 4 wagons sitting back there as well!

Blast my poor bidding technique! I bid my maximum a full 3 minutes before the auction end "to be safe", giving the other guy plenty of time to reconsider and outbid. Not to mention the bids I put in days before the end which drove the price up and encouraged others to bid higher. I still won it at the very last second, but if this was done right it would have been $400 less.
Still it's not bad deal for a clean SR5. I'm getting a parts car for $100 that will donate the windshield and spare everything.
