The true 4wd Toyota van's spank the AWD previas IMHO. Not bad vans and very long lived, but still inferior.

my wife loves these vans, lots of room inside. But they are pretty costly, even used with lots of miles on them. And heavy, meaning poor fuel economy, especially with the big V6 engine. She wants to replace the aging MPV, but it seems a waste to spend all that money to gain only 3 mpg. It seems finding the AWD components in the wrecking yard would be difficult as well.

Still the time may come to junk the MPV 4wd (over 300k miles now), and we still might consider the rare all-trac Previa. Mazda switched to the fwd van chassis with the transverse engine, and discontinued the 4x4 version (which was based on the truck chassis, too bad it makes for a very tough minivan).

There is also, the more rare AWD Sienna van, and even MORE expensive. I will stick with my Tercel.

There were an amazing amount of these around Japan still when I was there and still plenty in Australia where they are often converted into deluxe camping vans painted gaudy colours and hired out to backpackers. Most of my friends that are van inclined go in directions of the Delcia Mitsubishis that have the duel range gearbox and Pajero/Shogun frame and are pretty handy offroad.
