Jet #1

Post by kitchman »

Hello all,
New around here and have a few questions on an 1983 5 door auto. with 3-ac engine. First the #1 Jet #9092504003 orange in color in line with vac. breaker on carb. is it really needed, where avail., can be subsituted? Second- there appears to be two types of vac advances for this engine, one with only one hose on the sub. diaphram(mine) and the other having two hoses off the sub.-diaphram. Can the second type be subsituted for the first if one of the vac. ports is blocked.
Thanks in advance

i think i answered the vac advance can question in your other post.

for the jet, i can't say if it's absolutely necessary or not but the carb will probably run smoother with it. is yours busted? it's an easy test, just check the FSM in the emissions controls chapters. i think it should just have restricted flow one way and not the other but can't remember. if yours is broken or missing, just grab one from a wrecker. they'll probably charge you a buck.

the vac advance is interchangeable, you just block off the second port. Those are for cars equipped with the High Altitude Compensator (HAC), when above 3900+ ft it leans the fuel mixture and advances the spark. The early '84 and '83 did not come with it.

Thank you all for your replies, your suggestions are well received. About the Jet, the psm states to check for air passage in each direction, before mine broke into pieces, air did not flow in either direction.

I think that jet is to slow the opening of the choke if you slam the throttle down when it is cold. If the choke stays closed when you apply throttle it would choke off the air supply to the engine, so it has to be opened as you apply throttle. The jet just slows the opening of the choke. It only operates when the choke is activated (when cold), and you slam the throttle down fast (which is not really a good idea when the engine is cold anyway). At worst it might mean you get a slight flat spot when the engine is cold and you slam the throttle down. It will work fine without it, just take it easy until it warms up.

If you talking about that green thing! Mine the nipples broke into the lines, when I went to part store couldn't find any replacement so I put a one way valve and haven't seen any difference really!
