de-smog vacuum routing?
My brother bought a tercel and we are getting it running. Had bad intake manifold leaks and exhaust leaks. All smog is almost all gone including tvsv, egr, charcoal canister, HAC, HIC. Anybody have suggestions on vac routing for a stripped down aisin carb on 3A? What to do with the AAP?

Re: de-smog vacuum routing?
there have been some posts on this fairly recently, i think tercel_jon was doing it. IIRC, he couldn't get it to run smoothly with a lot of the vacuum stuff missing because a lot of it (like the HIC which regulates the HAI, which in turn allows warm air to enter the manifold on while cold to prevent carb icing). i can't remember the name of the thread but maybe search his posts for it.

Thanks dlb, I will look for that post. It definitely runs poorly when cold, as you would expect. It also has a very little power and stumbles when you try to accelerate. compression was 120 across all four. It burns a bit of oil. So I guess maybe I am expecting too much.

Re: de-smog vacuum routing?
You should be able to make it run okay, but certain things actually help the driveablity when it is cold. Go to the FSM and read about the function of each system, and what the normal "run" condition is. The AAP for example can not operate without the TVSV, it will run without the AAP operational, but will have a flat spot when cold.
The High Altitude compensator only operates above about 3900 ft, and the early '84 and 83 do not have them, they can be by-passed since most driving is done below that altitude. And the car should run better without the EGR, but you have to block it off properly or it will cause ping.

Check out this guys youtube channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/84hachi
He's got a lot of videos about mods to his ae86 sr5 which has a very similar engine and carb to the tercel. Removing the vac lines is one of the things he goes over in a lot of detail
