Re: LOST 5TH GEAR
Could be several issues, all of them internal to the trans, and very costly to fix. Usually cheaper to replace the trans with a used one if you can find a good one.
Drain your gear oil (follow the FSM procedure for the refill) and see if there are metal particles in the old oil. If so flush and refill the trans and maybe you can drive it for a while without 5th gear, there is a chance of total failure in the near future but you just do not know for sure. IF there is no metal particles in the drained gear oil, than likely the internal linage just wore out, and you can probably continue to drive it without fifth gear. Than save your money to buy a replacement trans, or go to tech school to learn how to do a transmission overhaul and replace the worn linkage parts.
It is important to get all the metal particles out of the trans ASAP, or the trans will totally give up very soon and you will have to replace it. With the metal particles flushed out it might last quite a few more miles before you have any more problems, but consider that all of the internal parts are wearing out.
If you find metal particles when you drain it, refill with 50/50 mixture of cheap ATF and cheap gear oil, drive it an hour of so at hwy speeds, than drain the mixture and than refill with quality gear oil. IT should bring out more metal particles (the ATF has high detergent qualities). Be gentle on the trans both with the ATF mixture on it, and from now on since you do not know how much longer you have with it. Be prepared to grieve the total loss of your trans and give it a decent burial soon, unless you can afford to rebuild it.
Good luck.

Re: LOST 5TH GEAR
mine did that and the 5th gear where the sleeve locks to the gear (teeth) was all broken off..
i called toyota (in the USA) theyt told me that gear was no longer available..
so i took out the tranny. tour it down and carefully welded & grinded the teeth back on it. did it over 6 months ago and still working
so if anyone can get a 5th gear please contact me.
