Australian terc project!

Post by aus_terc »

G'day all!

I'm Paul from Australia (yes, i'm the only Paul in Aus). I've been lurking here and finding info as I need it lately.

I recently picked up an '83 SR5 nice and cheap for a project car/learn stick/light off road fun times machine. It was a daily up until about 3 years ago, since then it sat in a paddock and deteriorated a bit. Old fuel sitting around did it no favors on re-start so they tinkered with the carb etc so it idled way too high, and sometimes would surge. Until I got around to trying to fix these problems, i've been having to start it with a shot of 80% ether right into the carb, and even then it was running like a dog most of the time.

It's been dead for a few weeks since i've pulled the carb off and given it a good clean, drained the fuel and new filter, new oil and plugs etc etc. We should be ready to put it all back together and put some fresh fuel in this weekend. All going to plan we will tune it a little better, but I'll probably be getting my local mechanic to give the carb a proper tune because I don't know how bad the guy I bought it off made it. Old plugs looked like it ran way too lean.

For your interest, here are the pictures to date of what we've been up to with it...I might make a project thread for you elsewhere later on

welcome to the list!

Nice to have another member from Down Under. Surging is almost always due to vacuum leak, and the run lean condition of the plugs also indicates vac leak. So before you spend any money on a carb tune, check all the vac lines for proper routing, disconnects and leaks. Also remember the intake manifold and carb gaskets as a source of leaks (loose bolts, etc.). That is likely the drivability problem. Good luck!

Post some pictures when you get a chance.
