WTB Axle Hub '85 2WD 4 door

Post by jeff.built »

I've got an intermittent noise on the front drivers side that I think I've localized to the wheel bearing. Put a new CV shaft on less than 2000 miles ago which was a re-manufactured one so can't imagine the noise is from it. The CV shaft is junk, but just a different noise than what the original was. The joint gave out in the driveway when backing in to park so I figure it slightly damaged the wheel bearing then. If anyone has a hub with a good bearing in it, it would make the repair a one day project instead of having to have a bearing pressed in by a shop. I did read the post on replacing the bearing at home (with freezer and oven) but that is beyond my skills! I'm going with a new GSP axle at the same time as the NAPA one I bought is too noisy already.

Junkyards close by don't hold onto anything old so have come up empty locally.

Thanks.

You can actually carefully drive the bearings in and out with a hammer! With a punch along the side of the bearing race to drive out and I use a socket to drive it in! If you put the hub on a vise it makes the job way easier! That's how I do it anyway! You can always rig a puller on it too with some imagination. To press in too, I make some kind of bearing tool with a long big strong bolt and thick strong washers of the right size(one bigger than the hub flange and 1 of the bearing race size! Put the bolt thru and squeeze it in by tightening the nut!
And for cv's the old one's are stronger(they use stronger alloys back then), if the inside is not to deteriorated, they can be refurbished! But it will cost more than the re manufactured one's which I can get for a 100 or so! The cost of the new bearings alone will be that much and the new rubber boots are around 40 for a kit per CV's but strong(don't get those split one, total garbage). The job can be done at home too, with few tools(hammer, vise, puller would help, basic ratchet kit, snap rings pliers(can always play around it,2 screwdrivers and hammer to punch out), I drive hard and they seem to last very good!

I might be able to get you a good one locally, it will take me a week or so to get it. Where are you located? What do you think it is worth? $40 plus shipping. Shipping can vary quite a bit depending where you are located.

Is the 2wd the same hub as the 4wd? If so I have one if it's cheaper for you to ship from CO.

yes they are the same
i take the hub apart as far as i can and clean the parts
then take to machine shop for assy
go to a shop that charges by the hour
it costs abt 35-45.00 here for one hub
i buy the bearing from rockauto (abt 20-40.00 depending on sales)
if i buy local they are at least twice that (often much more)
also need inner and outer seal
or just order the seal kit
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

I know they fit but not the same bearing set if I rememder good! Or maybe it's from the 1st gen and 2 gen too but can be use around! 1st gen 10$ a bearing meaning 20$ a wheel. Different bolt pattern though!

2wd and 4wd hub ass'ys are the same (i've swapped them before.) first gen tercels are completely different (rotors mount to the BACK side of the hub- i've always hated that.) good luck!
if it aint there, there's a good chance it won't break!
83 SR5 Silver/Blue (Snowmobile/work beater)-totaled but drivable
85 SR5 Blue
88 SR5 White (the 'good' one)-not anymore-totaled
87 fwd silver wagon a/t
87 4wd dx Cream (a/t- not anymore- now m/t)

Yep you got to pop the bearings out to change the rotor! Belive me kind of hate it too! Looking for a set of fx16 for mine! Camry looks like a fit but don't know about the spline of cv's to hub if will fit! I'm gonna try one of these days!
