Air Suction
I'm throwing my new Junkyard Weber on today. I even got the stock throttle lever on without any welding (I'll write that up later). Anyways, got the carb installed and fired the car up and the Air Suction system was blowing exhaust into the engine bay. It has pumped exhaust into the air cleaner system before, but it wasn't the biggest issue since it got recirculated. Now that I can't use the stock air filter housing it is a big problem. Iread through the FSM it looks like it is supposed to suck air or not have any flow at all. It is the California emissions car.
This leads me to think 1 of 2 things, either the exhaust is just taking the path of least resistance since there aren't any valves other than the one on the air cleaner housing or there is a restriction in the exhaust system.
Does anyone here know how one of these normally operates on the Cal emissions cars?

Re: Air Suction
I do use weber 32 dmsa 100 (same as 32/36 anyway same rebuilt kit), what I did it's cut a hole out of the stock to fit it's pretty tight but ur hood should close.
I don't know what clearance u got either or how did you mount it, I had to do an adapter plate.
So by doing so you can lose the emissions vacuums as there is none on the weber, just keep what goes to dizzy and the EGR(that will solve ur problem of exhaust gas recirculation). Don't forget to plug anything else that ur not using.
P.S. I wrote this from my phone so u might have to wait a bit so I can post pics.

Re: Air Suction
I was wondering if I could cut the air cleaner housing to fit. I think I may end up going that route. Clearance is pretty tight on mine too, I'm actually building an air filter out of a tin can and furnace filter until I get this sorted out, also no one can get the short weber filters right now.
Did you cut the housing to fit straight on the weber or did you get one of the circle air filter adapters and cut to fit that?

Re: Air Suction
I cut the stock air filter housing to fit on the weber and use a thick rubber gasket to seal the imperfection so I can use the tercel air filter (easier and cheaper to find). I do have the weber round air filter and housing but it so thick my hood would'nt close. I'll go to my friemds place tomorrow use is internet to post some pics that might help you, I'm too far in mountain too get it. Works on my phone but not able to post pic for some reason. Anyway they could be a way to reroute all of the emissions should fairly simple just did'nt bother too I'm in B.C. Canada in the middle of nowhere LOL. They work by vacuum, just put a 4way splitter on the vacuum line that runs out the weber then work from there.

Re: Air Suction
the exhaust port you can just cap off, if it is not connected to anything it will blow exhaust into the engine compartment (and usually make a lot of noise too).
I would consider getting a stock intake manifold, remove the studs for the stock carb and fill the stud holes with RTV, and than drill new holes to match the weber base. You eliminate the extra height of the adapter and can get normal sized filter in without cutting the hood.

Re: Air Suction
Now if only I had that advice two days ago, I'd have $50 more in my wallet. Oh well.
I plugged it with a dowel, I was a little concerned because before I swapped engines there was enough pressure in the AS that it exploded the rubber hose that connects to the air cleaner and before that would blow the hose off the fittings. I had visions of some object getting launched into low orbit if I went tearing down the road with it stuffed into the tube. No such problems, must have been the wonky vacuum routing on the old carb/engine.
I got the weber installed with my MacGyver brand air filter. Accelerating up hill at 75 is a joy I thought I would never experience again.

Re: Air Suction
Boy - talk about a two-faced air filter ! ! !
Well, in the Army we called it "Field Expediency." Bravo!
Now, as to cutting down the Redline filter; see https://tercel4wd.com/forums/viewtopic.php? ... lit=dremel
As noted, even with the short filter, I had clearance issues, so I performed the surgery.

Re: Air Suction
not a bad adaptation of the stock air filter. I hope the gasket seals properly between the top of the carb and the cut-up air filter. You do not want dusty air getting into the carb, it will wipe out the rings very quickly (I have seen it).
If the bottom of the air filter housing does not seal you might try putting some silicone sealant or RTV on it, plus a gasket (so you do not glue the housing onto the top of the carb!).

Re: Air Suction
Yes there is a gap but I used a 3/4 inch thick piece of rubber cut to fit and mate the curvy imperfection of the bowl squeeze in the between and on those carb the bowl bolts on, how handy , seals it right up.

Re: Air Suction
Pretty clever adaptation! Guess I'll have to look at the OE case again, although unneeded in MO.
Although - the Redline filter looks like it adds 0.5 HP...

Thanks Lil Beast, those pics are helpful. Everyone gets a laugh out of it, I almost don't want to change it because my girlfriend loves it, but I'd rather have a proper air filter.

Re: Air Suction
arbskynxnex - forgot to compliment you on the cam cover - looks powder coated - it's not, right?
And - I noticed that the front OE air cleaner mount on the cover has a broken bolt in it - just like mine! I wonder how many of us have the same situation?

Re: Air Suction
Thanks. No it isn't. I just painted it with some ceramic engine block paint. I took a wire wheel to the cover to get all the crap off and a fairly uniform surface, acetoned it until the rags didn't pick anything up, once it evaporated I put the cover on the wood stove to get warm so the paint would set quicker and not run. I really want to use the stock air cleaner since I painted that too, its black with the depressions the same color orange. I swear it made the car faster too.
I'd love to try powder coating stuff, but dad doesn't have 220v in his shop and my mom would kill me and dismember my carcass if I tried that in her oven.
There's no broken bolt, it is just where the paint came off from being in contact with the cleaner, though one of my old terks had the broken bolt you speak of.
