Pulling Rear Axles

Post by cz11@msn.com »

My question is: Do the rear axles really just pull out?

I am trying to replace the rear axle bearings on my 85 Tercel 4WD wagon.
I have the drum off and removed the 4 bolts for the plate that covers the bearing.

The axle does not slide out even with some force (I tied rope onto it and yanked with a sledge hammer weight).

Is there anything else holding it in place? Surely I do not have to open the rear differential to unbolt it!

I will try a real slide hammer axle puller next, but I'd like to know that this is the correct procedure, that I'm not missing any other bolts or pins.

Thank you. -- Charles Z in Jamestown Colorado.cz11@msn.com

if you have the drum off, you already have a make-shift puller-- simply put the drum back on the axle shaft BACKWARDS, install the lug nuts a few threads, and pull back and forth violently on the drum to shock the axle loose. it's worked for me before. good luck, let us know how it works out!
if it aint there, there's a good chance it won't break!
