Carb number tabs

Post by xirdneh »

I 've been rebuilding a couple of carbs this week
while doing so i got to thinking about the aluminum number tabs attached to the carbs
i have a small collection that include these numbers
15280 (3)
15281 (1)
15340 (3)
15440 (1)
has anyone delved into the differences?
Does anyone know how i can find the differences?
i have disassembled at least 12 carbs over the years and did not pay much attention
i have a collection of carb parts (sort of organized)
they all seem to have the same main body
I have at least three different bases
15340 seems to be the most common tab i have seen
i did not keep track of the differences
i have noticed the different size numbers marked on primary and secondary jets
101, 102, 103, 106 159,160
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

have you noticed a correlation with the jet size and the tags? or it it too late to check now? That is what I would suspect. Over the years there were constantly tightening emission regs, and CA always had higher standard too. So that may have been the reason for the difference. They never changed the hp rating, but that does not mean it did not change.

I just pulled a wrecking yard carb from an '83 hatchback, it was a # 15280.
All my other carbs are 15340.
I did not notice it was different, until testing it on a T4.

It is missing a small vacuum port, (present on #15340)
the one right above the larger vacuum port that goes to the air cleaner valve,
(the one you must plug when running without the air cleaner).
This missing line went through a yellow check valve to a choke opener,
the one next to the heat coil choke spring, on 15340 carbs.

It runs and idles fine,
but I don't know what to do with the now unused vacuum line to the choke opener,
other than plugging it.

I have found that jet sizes are different. Common sizes 101, 102, 103 and one time 106. 15340 is most common. I do not remember what jet is in what carb. I generally use 101. 106 was more power but never got more than 27 mpg.
