Carburator Location

Post by caerickson »

I know this is a silly question. But can someone please tell me where the carburetor is located exactly in my 85 Tercel SR5? It occasionally starts rough and usually diesels out. I have been told that it could be the fuel cut solenoid valves. Does anyone have any other ideas? Thank you.

open up the hood. see the thing that looks like a spaceship? that's the air filter housing. take it off (just a few bolts if IIRC) and you'll see that it connects to the carb.

do a search on here for fuel cut solenoids, i think board member CMB was just fiddling with his.

Welcome to the list Chad.

If you can not yet identify what a carburator is than perhaps you can find a local list member to help walk you through some of the basics before you start messing around under the hood. Where are you located?

I have found that sometimes a dieseling problem upon shut-off can be a result of a vacuum leak or several of them. With all of those vacuum hoses, it would be prudent to check them to make sure they're routed correctly and in good condition.

we have several list members in the Denver area. Herban works in the Denver area and lives near Boulder, he is very knowledgeable about Tercels.

You remove the air cleaner by removing the two 10mm bolts holding the air cleaner housing to the valve cover, and than removing the wing nut in the center of the black airfilter housing. lift the airfilter assembly carefully, there will be a short rubber hose between the airfilter and the top of the valve cover that must be slipped off, and as you lift it further you have to slip off a vacuum hose attached to a fitting on the underside of the airfilter housing. Than you should be able to wiggle it off where it attached the air intake on the left side (as you view it) of the grill. The carburetor is this complicated looking little metal gizmo right in the center under the airfilter housing.

You have to connect all these hoses and lines to put the airfilter back on. But when it is off you can inspect all the vacuum hoses and lines to see if any are broken or disconnected, or even routed wrong by studying the vac routing diagram. It gets very messy after that, so that is why having some help would be very useful. Do not randomly pull hoses off and put them back in the wrong place, your problems will get worse if you do. all of them are there for a reason.
