I think my tranny went tonite

Post by xirdneh »

I wanted to move the car with out starting it
so i reached for the shifter and popped it out of reverse into neutral without pushing in the clutch.
I pushed the car a few feet and left it.
later i loaded up the dog to take him for a hike
started the car and tried to shift into reverse but it would not go
tried all the other gears too
still no luck
it is stuck in fourth or fifth gear and the shifter flops around like its in neutral
i pulled the shifter just in case it was something simple (like the shifter itself)
but that was not it

I think it had nothing to do with the clutch, the shifter forks get worn to the point where they will jump their track and the lever becomes useless. I had one that got stuck in 2nd gear when I was way up in Concrete WA, just did a normal shift and boom, all I got was 2nd gear. I drove it home that way, some 40 miles keeping it below 30 mph. When I pulled the drain plug out came only about a quart of gear oil full of sparkly metal particles.

That trans came from Tercel4wdrules and he said it sometimes pops out of gear. You might try fluid flush (50/50 AFT/gear oil) drive it for a day and than drain, and add new gear oil. Sometimes that will clean out old gunk and metal wear and make it act properly again.

I didn't think so either. Besides, that trans that I gave back to xirdneh, it didn't pop out of gear, it was just annoying noisy...

Than that should be good trans, it had well under 200k miles on it if I recall. I rescued it from a wrecked Tercel4wd at the wrecking yard before it went to the crusher. Even if good Tercel bodies end up in the wrecking yards, no good 4wd trans should ever be allowed get sent to the crusher!

You should have it in and drivable by now, how is the new trans? The old one should be good for parts.
