Interesting enough my last leak was from the tailshaft due to being overfull. Well, that leak stopped after I ordered the new seal.
This time its coming from the Drivers side where the CV goes in. I parked facing slightly downhill last night, and I went out there just now to move the car and WOW! A puddle, yes a puddle, of gear oil roughly 12 inches across. I turned the car around so it was facing up hill. Weird that this is happening all of a sudden.
So uh....what am I looking for? Differential Pinion Seal? I thought it would be the Differential seal, but it says thats for a 3speed.
Would thicker weight gear oil help stem the leak till I can take it apart to fix it? (if so, what weight we talking here?) Its my only running car at the moment.
Leaking gear oil again...rather scary at the amount too.

I think you'd better buy some gear oil and refill the trans, regardless of when it is fixed. I have a feeling that possibly the diff seal just perished.

ARCHINSTL, I never thought of that. Ill check that its all the way in tomorrow morning. If it was fully seated before, what would make it come back out? I put the CVs in after swapping the trans in march or april.
Thanks alot for Beck arnley #. Ill order one after I check the CV tomorrow. Headed into town anyways tomorrow and thankfully the first gas station on the way will have some. I am NOT going to kill a another trans.
seams my search terms werent pulling up what I needed again.

Well - the funny thing with mine was that I installed the new axle in October of 2007 and it did not leak until July of 2008 (and 2K miles had elapsed), at which point it started immediately and quite noticeably (puddle). I would have thought that it should have leaked at least some long before then (the seal was also new, of course). Why not? Who knows?

Re: Leaking gear oil again...rather scary at the amount too.
after i replaced a CV i noticed my passenger side CV seal started leaking. got a new seal, put it in, but it would start leaking again after 15-20 minutes of driving. i was pretty sure i had it in the right depth but i pulled it out and put it back in, only to have the same problem. did it again, same problem. finally ordered another new CV seal in case the other one was defective. it's now been several weeks with no leak.
moral of the story? CV seals can be finicky, i guess.

I checked the axle and its all the way in. Also when I had it facing up hill I noticed that my leak in the tailshaft had come back with a renewed vengeance. I did get some more gear oil so I can make to a couple places this weekend and make some more money so I can get the seals. Got the car sitting with the passenger side on the downslope to stem the leak...hope it works.
Wait a sec...I have two more transmissions laying around with known good seals. Imma pull them out and put them in this one. Sweet.
Thanks for the info DLB, at least I know its not the kind of seal thats destroyed by the removal process and if it dont work, try another one. Sweet...that means I have 4 extras...wait...no, 3 extras. Cause the one on my first and original trans was bad.
Thanks fellas! I should have the seals swapped out by the first couple days next week.
