external voltage regulator types?

Post by Polar Bear »

Hi,
I'm putting up some off-road work lights on the roof before the hunting season, so I've been checking that the alternator and regulator are working properly. I get 13,4V at 2000rpm, when all the lights are on and heater is on max etc, so I'd like to get some more volts.
The local parts store have two types of ext regulators for sale, mechanical, and electronic. I've not seen them in person yet, just checking their cataloque, but it says both should fit my Terc.
The current one is mechanical, and I'd like to get just a tad more volts out of it, but just to be on the safe side I'm thinking of buying one as a spare, before I try to adjust/bend the current one, as FSM shows. Should there be any problems with the electric regulator? could it be the the same as "solid state voltage regulator"? Can it fry up my Terc?

Sorry for the dumb question, but I'm no electric wizard by any means

In my experience both types of aftermarket regulators work OK...but neither last all that long. 2Xs I had a reg fail...and the alt put out full charge...one time frying the battery.

A decent OEM used mechanical regulator would be your best bet...but hard to find?

I wouldn't mess with the regulators unless you really know what you are doing...with all that stuff going...anything above 12Vs should be OK? A spare would be a good idea though? Maybe a voltmeter to keep track of the battery/alt?

Thanks takza,
luckily I have a spare regulator from the spare-doner car. I think I'll still try to fiddle with that, and get just a bit more out of it. I do have a digital voltmeter installed(got one from ebay, cheap), for the very reason I dont want to fry or empty my battery. Especially when on hunting trip or just far away from home. :)
