CARBURETOR
Hi Y'all
This is my first post
I bought my second Tercel on friday and my first sr5 wagon 1985 it is apple green colored
I bought it not running but got it to idle today with help from this forum
things i did already
replaced fuel filter
checked shut off solenoids
fuel is correct through the window
blew air back to tank to pump and checked that fuel was pumping it is now
sprayed the carb with carb cleaner some into the inlet used starting fluid and got it running
after a few minutes it would idle great @ 900 rpm but if i give it throttle it will rev to 1700 then start
to lower rpms with more gas it sounds more like not getting enough fuel but its just a guess
if i let of the gas it idles fine
the question i have is how much fuel should the pump pump per minute ?
any thing else i can check or adjust
previous owner told me it needs the carbs rebuilt
should i go to a weber carb now
this car was one owner and in near perfect shape i had the a/c running today moon roof works tires are great i feel so lucky to find it
but has not ran for two years till today and wont go above 2000 rpms with own fuel but will with starter fluid
i did put new gas on top of old gas but this is what made prev owner park it two years ago.
any southern oregon members recomend a mechanic?
thanks for having such a great web site. isn’t FSM = flying spaghetti monster?

Re: CARBURETOR
lol at the flying spaghetti monster reference. Its the factory service manual at the top of the page.
There should be a way to test the output of the pump in the FSM. I find after sitting for a while, the toyota pumps start to degrade. At least thats what happened to my 87 hatch that sat for almost 5 years. Same symptoms your describing, but I also was squirting oil out of the weep hole.
Also check your vacuum lines.

Re: CARBURETOR
I did family things today but will be at it after work this next week.
the stock carb with all the emission stuff on it looks like the flying spaghetti monster
I realy like the photos of the weber set up minus emissions plumbing
the red line weber kit is about 300 dollars is that the way to go?
i did replace some vacuum lines yesterday

Re: CARBURETOR
I myself have not done a weber swap so I cant tell you much information about it.
But many members have done the Weber swap and are very happy with it. The ability to easily tune the mixture screws is a BIG plus. The stock carb, you have to drill out a plug to get to the mixture screw. The weber also offers more power and mpgs from what Ive read. Plus, its shiny. hehe.
If you go through the FSM, starting in the emissions control section, it starts explaining what all the vacuum lines are for. But if you want to swap to the weber, dont worry about it.

Re: CARBURETOR
Welcome to the list!
The stock carb works great if you have all the emission stuff working properly. So first thing you should do is check all the vac lines for leaks, and proper routing (do not assume who ever worked on it last knew what they were doing). Us a can of carb spray to check for vacuum leaks.
A weber is a popular thing to do, but pretty costly compared to just rebuilding your carb. It is not that difficult to do yourself, just follow the test/assemble procedures in the FSM. Make sure you have a clear space to work on it so you can spread the tiny parts out on clean paper to assist in reassembly. I have been useing the stock carb for over 100k of driving and have been okay with it. I am planning on adapting a fuel injection system, which is better than any carb, so I have to plan to up grade to a weber carb.
Search Ebay for used webers, they show up regularly much cheaper than new. You likely would need to rebuild it and you would have to make your own adapter (or buy the adapter separately).
Sounds like a great find. Post pictures. Good luck.

Re: CARBURETOR
a weber carb is a fun performance upgrade but i find i get the exact same mileage. it sounds like it might be a cure-all for any carb related problems but it's not. after i put mine on, i've had predetonation problems that i've dealt with but not solved. unless you want driving the terc to be more fun, i would just fix the problem you have. that sounds like a bummer if you're unsure what the problem is but it will ultimately be less work and you will wind up learning more about your car and be better at troubleshooting it in the future, which is priceless, obv. and the emissions stuff is a total pain but a lower carbon footprint ain't a bad thing.
check the timing while it's idling. look for vacuum leaks through all the vacuum line, looking for lines that are cracked/broken or not attached. pull the plugs and look at their condition: chocolate is good, white is too hot, black is too rich, oily means there's oil in the combustion chamber. there are other ones but those are the most common.
those are some basics that may help to point you in a direction. how much old gas was in there? if it was sat with almost no gas in the tank for 2 years, condensation could build up on the gas tank walls and then run down into the gas, especially during winter. might try a fuel additive or better yet, draining the tank and filling it with fresh gas.

Re: CARBURETOR
thanks for your suggestions
today i discovered it speeds up when i spray starting fluid at the base of the
back side of the carb so that may be it but didnt do it so much when warm
but still bogs down @1700 rpm.
I’m in live work situation where i cant make a peanut butter sandwich with out
some one touching it and loosing the lid or spoon in the couch or bathtub
i have a 2 and a 4 year old all up in my space at the moment so doing it myself is out
of the question at the moment don’t have garage etc.
here are the first pics shoulda took some with the sticky tree sap on it all ive done is clean
the whole car with wd-40.

Re: CARBURETOR
It looks quite clean - an indication of how the PO took care of it is (usually) how clean the DS rug is.
My experience with the Weber is the same as dlb's - but without the predetonation. A little extra power, the same MPG, but a lot less hesitation and OE carb-related issues. Overall, it was worth it and I do not regret it. The only "difficulty" - and I would not quite characterize it as such - is that it takes a few extra twirls of the starter in hot restarts, but only in really hot wather, like we are very much having now.
Since it sped up when you sprayed the base of the carb, it would certainly seem that you have a vac leak. You might get a new gasket for it - or at least carefully remove the carb and use a sealer (but a new gasket+sealer would be better).
Cute daughter/model! Does she have a name for the Terc? Of course, I'm prejudiced - I had three of them.

Re: CARBURETOR
I thank you all for your help
the bottom of the hole closest to the engine looking down the air horn
i can see fuel at the bottom maybe a half inch high with full throttle it slowly disappears
have never seen fuel squirt any where looking down the air horn
so maybe its too much fuel that kills it past 1700 rpm
another thing is that the high altitude compensator unit has a noticeable vibration to the touch not sure if normal
I haven’t named the car yet my old 89 tercel ez was called terzel or terzy
but this one needs a new name like the "the car" or "the wagon" since we have "the truck" and "the van"
already both toyotas.
I put a picture of how much rubber is on brake pedal some thing some one told me to check when buying a car when i was young he said it usually has a hole in it at 100000 and missing at 200000 usually correct on most cars this tercel has 120k so they must be mostly highway miles who knows maybe Toyota had good rubber this year but this carpet is perfect even in the trunk area no kids but a dog chewed the driver seat belt and a little back seat area visible from back window but not too bad.
I think i am all ready for the reline Weber kit k740 but was wondering if the stock air filter can be modified to work with the weber carb to keep hot air intake and cold air intake too. or is it too tall?
thanks again

Re: CARBURETOR
Re the Weber - BE SURE you specify the "short" air filter; some vendors will sub it at no cost and some will charge $30+ extra for it. I went with Carbs Unlimited for this reason - a no prob swap out.
Some members do not have clearance issues when using the OE phenolic spacer - I did. See the Repair Guides for my 2010 fix&pix of the filter element (I also had to cut away a segment of the hood X-member for clearance.
I don't think anyone has yet come up with a way to adapt the current hot air intake to the Weber filter. Dunno how cold it gets in your neck of the woods, but while it would be desirable, it's not been a prob in STL.

Re: CARBURETOR
I ordered the weber kit today from napa (little more than online)but i get to go pick it up monday or tuesday instead of wait for it for who knows how long and return shipping if there is a problem but got a good deal i think.
If all goes as planned I should have all the emissions and carb stuff available if any body needs them
one thing on there i was wondering how it works and that is the high altitude gizmo i looked at the fsm
im still confused it looks like not for California and an option elsewhere I live at 1800ft in ashland oregon
with mt ashland ski area 6300ft at parking lot and the ocean not to far but 3 hours by car through the red wood highway. just put on a thule rack got used fits great need to shorten the cross bars as they stick out real far could probably put my canoe in the middle and a bike on each side its that wide right now im all dreaming of things for this car and it dont even run yet would like to get mr2 rims the chunky ones some forum member has pics on this site
Archinstl you are a cyclist thats cool i read that in another thread me too have worked with bikes most my life im still a young pup but love working on bikes currently i work at a bicycle tool distributor here thats been around 30 plus years
you may have done business wit us at some point. well of topic and rambling sorry could the weber be modified to include altitude compensator?
I did specify short air filter btw
