Q's about the systems the TVSV supports

Post by Tercel__jon »

The TVSV got broken due to a careless moron... now I have questions about bypassing the systems it supports. I know the EGR operates off of it. (yeah, Ive spent the past hour or so reading the FSM for once)

I know the EGR helps MPGs... and one thats not working (ie: clogged) hurts it. However...can I just remove it? Or unhook it? Im trying to retain my MPGs without any detrimental affects.

For the Distributor, Ill do like one member on here did, and just hook the distributors vac advance straight to carb vacuum. I'll still be able to run my 10* or so of timing without worrying about it advancing too high will I?

I also know the choke operates off of the TVSV...I can get around that by using a lawnmower throttle cable and convert it to manual. (Which in my opinion would help out alot)

Oh, before anyone says buy another, or go to the junkyard...I cant. I would, If I had the money. But I drove a friend to WVA for $50. Hit a deer in the cressida, and had a blowout in lynchburg that stranded me for 2 hours till I got a money transfer. Spent All the money I made, and the rest of my money on the tire. I have literally $2 to my name. However, if I can get this baby fixed enough to drive me to the farm, I can make some money and start over.

i would say that you can disconnect every vacuum line if you want to and just plug all the ports but takza mentions in one of the threads i linked to that he tried and it sucked. you could give it a try anyway but i would take takza's word for it and, instead, try repairing the TVSV. there are a few threads on it, like these ones:

Ill take his and your word for it. But I didnt want to remove all of them, just redirect the ones that go to the TVSV. Theres about 3 other systems not related to the TVSV that are rather necessary from what i can tell.

I do have some permatex silicone sealant thats rated for -40 - 400* so I guess Ill give it a try.

In the meantime though, Im still looking for ways to bypass it.

Ah, heres the thread where petros talks about disabling the EGR and bypassing the TVSV for the vacuum advance. https://tercel4wd.com/forums/viewtopic.php? ... EGR#p37003

I think I had trouble getting the car to idle with it bypassed...doesn't mean you couldn't set the idle up some and be able to drive it if you had to. Also...if I had spent more time messing around...I might have figured it out.

Well, i found all the pieces for the tvsv. Im very wary about trying to glue it cause its in about 4 pieces... But the good news is I found $5 in the glovebox of my other car so Ill be able to get another one from the junkyard. Ill give it a go fiddling around with the lines.

I jsut remembered. on my 87 hatch, the tvsv had several broken ports on it and the car ran fine.

Ill figure something out and when I do, Ill report back.
