New brakes same problem

Post by xirdneh »

While going down hills and doing some hard braking my car has been doing a shuddering/groaning thing. Yesterday I installed new rotors and pads on front along with new drums and shoes on rear. The old rotors were pretty bad and the drums were worn just past the limits. Shoes and pads were about 3/4 worn.
But replacing all that did not solve the problem.
What do i replace next?
oh yea, I Also replaced the rear shocks
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

I'm sure while doing that maintenance you checked this, but just in case...
Assuming the shuddering/groaning is coming from the front end - how about the swaybar-to-control arm area? And various front suspension points?

Got a dial indicator? I would be checking for bent hubs or a defective rotor/drum. Also, did you clean all rust from the hubs where the rotor/drum sits against it?

Will it do it with just the parking brake? If so you just isolated it to the rears. If it's rears, check the drums for out of round. Also make sure all 6 pads on each backing plate where the shoes ride don't have grooves/rust ridges and also a light smudge of non melting grease on them.

You did wash the new rotors and drums right? Soap/hot water and a scrub brush are best, brakeclean is the next best thing(if it's residue free). If you didn't clean the oil off, you need new shoes/pads already.

Please tell me you didn't get your brakes from the Zone!

Oh, and as Tom mentioned, make sure the front end is good too.

I wiped them off with gasoline to remove the light film.
I wire brushed the hubs
I will be trying the E brake thing
The backing plates for the pads looked good to me (no worse than others that worked fine on other Tercels)
I doubt the rotors or drums are the problem since the old ones did the same thing
My wife says its more like a "Washboard" sound
Other front end parts checked out OK except for one inner tie rod end that had a small amount of movement

Are the adjuster screws free and the shoes fully adjusted? I know these are tougher than other cars to get at the star wheel, but I always goes for a light drag on new shoes. I have seen misadjusted brakes cause a shudder.

Also, tires good? Maybe rotate and see if the condition changes and/or the noise moves.

i bought the rotors at o'reillys
yes they are cheap (20.00) and made in China
but i have used them before with no problem

i bought a second set of rotors
then guessing it was the front left that was causing the shuddering i replaced it
that cut out 80 percent of the problem
the dashboard is not vibrating any more
what little shuddering/groaning is left seems to be coming from the rear
might just live with that

took the bad rotor back and exchanged it for another

up grade to the 25 mm vented front rotors and that problem will go away. '92 or newer Tercel rotors and calipers are all you need, plus an 1/8" hub shim to center the rotors on the wider calipers.
